jaredjseveral things still are not right. the nfs debugging in the dmesg says nfs_getauth: clnt princ=NULL. two WrongSecs happen this way as root, at least one for my .login_conf and maybe eh one to see if my home directory exists.
-
polariannope didnt change anything
-
polarianugh
-
polarianfuck sake
-
polarianmaybe its an issue with disk io errors
-
polarianlemme reinstall xorg entirely
-
polarianjust in case
-
polarianas I observe that disk IO stops entirely half way through loading xorg
-
jaredjboo
-
jaredji installed, like, the nvidia driver, but not xorg, and it pulled in the xorg server packages *but not* the drivers for the keyboard and mouse
-
jaredjso then i ran X and got a blank black screen and the only way to make it go away was (a) to hit the power button, or (b) to ssh in and kill X
-
jaredji found out about the -retro switch to the X server, without which the default behavior is to show a blank black screen and to leave the mouse cursor set to *nothing* until something sets it
-
polarianwait hold up
-
polarianwhat happens?
-
polarianoh nvm
-
jaredjwhich is fine and good if you are running a desktop environment or window manager, it's smoother that way, but if you just run X to see if it works -- blank black screen, no mouse cursor
-
polarianI am getting a blank black screen, mouse cursor
-
polarianand the xorg logs show after the cursor is loaded
-
polarianthen nothing
-
polarianim honestly clueless of what to do now
-
jaredjuh oh. yes mouse cursor and *then* nothing?
-
polarianyes...
-
polarianlike the only thing I can think of is to resort to a snapshot of root
-
polarianbut that was quite the while ago :/
-
polarianI was meaning to setup auto-snapshotting buttt
-
polarianlol
-
polarianlemme try that then I guess
-
polarianwelp, that worked
-
polarianso its not a hardware failure
-
jaredjhmh!
-
jaredjwell that's good at least
-
polarianalright I disabled the kmod repo
-
polariandoing a pkg upgrade and then going to try rebooting and see if I can still get into xorg
-
polarianI also need to installkernel/installworld again
-
polarianhmmm
-
polarianmaybe its a kmod change...
-
polarianlemme see what the git history shows
-
polariandrm-66-kmod is removed, in favour for something else
-
polariancould be a change of default version
-
jaredjdrm-612-kmod, i'd imagine?
-
polarianerr?
-
polarianisnt that lower than 66
-
polarianoh wait no
-
polarian6.12 right
-
polarian612
-
polarianso its higher
-
jaredji believe it's 6.12 not 6.1.2 :)
-
jaredjyeah
-
polarianfucking Linux software and their shitty versioning
-
jaredjyeah. i thought the same thing. oh 66 that's bigger
-
polarianshould I write a blogpost on the pains of freebsd desktop I wonder :p
-
polarianhonestly I thought freebsd desktop progressed to the point where graphics issues were done for good
-
jaredj:/
-
DoofusCanadensisis this current hardware?
-
polarianDoofusCanadensis: no
-
polarianivy bridge
-
DoofusCanadensisI don't know what ivy bridge is
-
polarian3rd gen intel
-
jaredjit is an intel chipset designation
-
DoofusCanadensisand around what years was it produced?
-
polarian2013
-
DoofusCanadensisthanks
-
DoofusCanadensisI have a 2012 system that I've struggled to get desktop working on
-
DoofusCanadensisI suspect I'd have an easier time on more current hardware
-
polarianI have heard the opposite
-
polarianframework is best supported
-
DoofusCanadensisoh?
-
polarianbut newer hardware until 15.0 had driver issues
-
DoofusCanadensisframework is new hardware, tho
-
polarianyes
-
polarianbut its explicitly supported
-
polarianI *really* need to setup autosnapshotting
-
polarianok yeah drm-612-kmod
-
polarianif this breaks, I am going to try drm-66-kmod again
-
polarianchecking the git history of the port repo now
-
polarianffs scrubbing the ports takes forever...
-
polarianhmmm
-
polariandrm hasnt been touched since 29th Sep
-
polarianand that was...
-
polarianah
-
polarian27th Sep there was an update the the latest drm kmods...
-
polarianhmmm
-
polarianreproduced, there is definitely an issue with drm-612-kmod
-
polarianI am going to try drm-latest-kmod first, to see if its been patched already, and if not go back to drm-66-kmod and see if it works
-
jaredjhurray!
-
polarianseems there is similar issues with coffee lake (8th gen) using i915drm on bugzilla with drm-612-kmod
-
polariansomething inside feels like it might not be the kmod though
-
polarianand its something completely arbitary which was also included in the port update recently
-
polarianah I didnt think of checking dmesg
-
polarianinteresting, /var/log/messages shows nothing
-
polarianafter startx theres no further logs anywhere
-
polarianthe entire userspace is kaputt
-
jaredjO_o
-
jaredjoh this is so.. sloooow
-
jaredjoh it's slow because of nfs. interesting
-
polarianlatest failed
-
polariangoing back to 66 to test that
-
polarianI hope to fuck this works
-
polarianotherwise I have no more ideas
-
jaredjhm yes i am on 66
-
jaredji think that means i failed with 612 and my legacy nvidia driver
-
polarianFUCK YEAH
-
polarianIT FUCKING WORKS
-
polarianI have only lost my entire fucking night to this
-
polarianjaredj: 612 seems buggy
-
polarianI see other issues with it
-
polarianwhich makes me wonder why drm-kmod is not defaulting to 612 when its buggy
-
polarianlemme cc #freebsd-desktop
-
jaredjwooo great work!
