several things still are not right. the nfs debugging in the dmesg says nfs_getauth: clnt princ=NULL. two WrongSecs happen this way as root, at least one for my .login_conf and maybe eh one to see if my home directory exists.

as I observe that disk IO stops entirely half way through loading xorg

i installed, like, the nvidia driver, but not xorg, and it pulled in the xorg server packages *but not* the drivers for the keyboard and mouse

so then i ran X and got a blank black screen and the only way to make it go away was (a) to hit the power button, or (b) to ssh in and kill X

i found out about the -retro switch to the X server, without which the default behavior is to show a blank black screen and to leave the mouse cursor set to *nothing* until something sets it

which is fine and good if you are running a desktop environment or window manager, it's smoother that way, but if you just run X to see if it works -- blank black screen, no mouse cursor
