so i seem to be having edmund fitzgerald crashes

what i mean by that is that while I have a dumpdevice set, it's not being effectively used

netdump is not finishing, resulting in the server printing a "client timed out" error; if I set an SSD as the dump device, when the system comes around attempting savecore is futile

(just tells me something about a bad magic number)

do i need to partiton the SSD before I can use it as a dumpdev

what are you partitions / dump settings in rc.conf

on the netdump side: it is using the dumpdevice, but it never even starts, let alone finishes, sending the dump once it actually starts the communication with the netdump server.

I can't say i'm familar with netdump

really i should get a serial USB adapter and put in the optional serial port on my desktop, and then muck about there

for the longest time, it just wasn't an option (no swap device)

now i have a swap volume, I tried using it, the time taken shows it seems to be used, but trying to read the crashdump back evidences it having gone into a blackhole

hence why i need the serial affair, to actually figure out wtf is being done

and I don't have that way, because neither can I dump to an SSD, nor over the network (I have had the latter working before, but not reliably)

i don't know why you wouldn't be able to dump to a ssd

bad magic sounds like perhaps your dump was overwritten by swap after the system booted

again: that is implausible, swap to the SSD has to be set up manually to work at all

it seems far more likely the dump is just never getting made

but given that the trigger for the crash is loading a graphics driver, it would make sense that i have no console by which to see how the kernel is responding to crashing, which is step 1 in figuring out why it can't store a dump anywhere

indeed, a serial console sounds like it would help in this case

try sockstat -46nlp 5984

how do i diagnose random reboots?

last(1) will tell you if freebsd is being rebooted

if it isn't freebsd reboots it is either a hardware issue or a panic

if you think it might be a panic you can configure the system to stop in the debugger or to perform a core dump. Then you could check for the core dump

if not it's a hardware issue

how would last indicate a reboot? `last reboot` shows the past so many boot times and then where utx.log begins, but nothing about reboot

ahh nevermind, just running 'last' shows crashes for various sessions, so it was a panic

after making changes with "make makepatch" (and renaming some files to .orig), how can i rebuild ports without any modifications? it seems not to be enough if i return the original files (rename .orig back to original) and then "make clean" & "make reinstall"

or do i have to wipe the whole ports tree?

hubertm: iirc makepatch directly puts the patches into files/, so remove them from there again (files/ is part of the port, make clean only removes build artifacts)

those files folders i can find don't seem to contain anything related

there's no portname/files directory

but red on red is a little hard on the eyes to be honest, better have a brighter heading background and a black font, negative space

I get a dark brown/redish background

hi, in a VNET jail I need to add a 2nd IP (an alias) and a static route to re0, how can I do that?. I used route add -net 192.168.20.254 192.168.20.2

But that added that route to lo0 instead of re0

BTW, netstat -nr shows all routes pointing to lo0 Netif, is that correct?

yes, the hover color change is intentional, but i'm not tied to it if folks feel it's distracting. the links at the bottom do that because they're empty placeholder links. they wouldn't do that in a production setting. i just copied the text over to mock up the section.
