bbrtj: unluckly i never used bluetooth for audio on fbsd, but you tried using virtual_oss_ctl?
-
badkat
i never risked my self to have such an issue when bringin girls to home so i have a 7 meters 3.5mm audio jack extensor :P

LET THE BRIDE SAY COME , THOSE WHO ARE WORTHY LET THEM BE WORTHY STILL ... .
-
MelMalik
so i seem to be having edmund fitzgerald crashes
-
MelMalik
what i mean by that is that while I have a dumpdevice set, it's not being effectively used
-
MelMalik
netdump is not finishing, resulting in the server printing a "client timed out" error; if I set an SSD as the dump device, when the system comes around attempting savecore is futile
-
MelMalik
(just tells me something about a bad magic number)
-
MelMalik
do i need to partiton the SSD before I can use it as a dumpdev
-
x0x17
hi all
-
rtprio
MelMalik: your system crashes and is not using the dumpdevice?
-
rtprio
what are you partitions / dump settings in rc.conf
-
MelMalik
on the netdump side: it is using the dumpdevice, but it never even starts, let alone finishes, sending the dump once it actually starts the communication with the netdump server.
-
rtprio
I can't say i'm familar with netdump
-
MelMalik
really i should get a serial USB adapter and put in the optional serial port on my desktop, and then muck about there
-
MelMalik
but
-
rtprio
what's wrong with dumping to the local disk?
-
MelMalik
for the longest time, it just wasn't an option (no swap device)
-
MelMalik
now i have a swap volume, I tried using it, the time taken shows it seems to be used, but trying to read the crashdump back evidences it having gone into a blackhole
-
MelMalik
hence why i need the serial affair, to actually figure out wtf is being done
-
rtprio
does your screen console not work? it should say something like: found dump, writing dump... and continue booting
-
MelMalik
it doesn't say that; when i run savecore manually it just says something about bad magic
-
rtprio
that sounds like perhaps it was used as swap again? was it?
-
MelMalik
(i mean i also set up dumpon manually; the whole thing is a bit cursed)
-
rtprio
i just use systems that don't crash
-
MelMalik
that is implausible; trying to set it up as swap in fstab actually doesn't work
-
MelMalik
well count yourself lucky you have that luxury, dear
-
MelMalik
not everyone does
-
MelMalik
and when your system DOES crash you need a way to figure out why
-
MelMalik
and I don't have that way, because neither can I dump to an SSD, nor over the network (I have had the latter working before, but not reliably)
-
rtprio
i don't know why you wouldn't be able to dump to a ssd
-
rtprio
bad magic sounds like perhaps your dump was overwritten by swap after the system booted
-
MelMalik
again: that is implausible, swap to the SSD has to be set up manually to work at all
-
MelMalik
it seems far more likely the dump is just never getting made
-
MelMalik
but given that the trigger for the crash is loading a graphics driver, it would make sense that i have no console by which to see how the kernel is responding to crashing, which is step 1 in figuring out why it can't store a dump anywhere
-
rtprio
indeed, a serial console sounds like it would help in this case

try sockstat -46nlp 5984
-
ring0_starr
how do i diagnose random reboots?
-
[tj]
last(1) will tell you if freebsd is being rebooted
-
[tj]
if it isn't freebsd reboots it is either a hardware issue or a panic
-
[tj]
if you think it might be a panic you can configure the system to stop in the debugger or to perform a core dump. Then you could check for the core dump
-
[tj]
if not it's a hardware issue
-
ring0_starr
how would last indicate a reboot? `last reboot` shows the past so many boot times and then where utx.log begins, but nothing about reboot
-
ring0_starr
ahh nevermind, just running 'last' shows crashes for various sessions, so it was a panic
-
[tj]
ring0_starr: you will need to look up the sysctls to configure automatic dumps, but this should help once you have a core

hubertm
after making changes with "make makepatch" (and renaming some files to .orig), how can i rebuild ports without any modifications? it seems not to be enough if i return the original files (rename .orig back to original) and then "make clean" & "make reinstall"
-
hubertm
or do i have to wipe the whole ports tree?
-
nimaje
hubertm: iirc makepatch directly puts the patches into files/, so remove them from there again (files/ is part of the port, make clean only removes build artifacts)
-
hubertm
those files folders i can find don't seem to contain anything related
-
hubertm
there's no portname/files directory
-
hubertm
okay, by grepping through the whole ports tree with the name of a modified file i found the relevant files folder
-
markmcb
looking for feedback on a website proposal from anyone willing to give it (direct message is fine):
freebsd.markmcb.com
-
mzar
nice
-
veg
is it a proposal to replace the current website, markmcb?
-
markmcb
veg: yes
-
veg
I feel it's a strong improvement design wise
-
veg
however, the contrast is a little low for readability IMHO
-
veg
adding SVG logos & visual branding is great
-
markmcb
veg: thanks. regarding contrast, do you mean the thin font on the white background?
-
veg
but red on red is a little hard on the eyes to be honest, better have a brighter heading background and a black font, negative space
-
veg
I get a dark brown/redish background
-
veg
maybe because my system uses darkmode?
-
markmcb
veg: ah, ok, in dark mode, yes, i can improve that. click on the light bulb at the top to see non-dark mode
-
veg
OMG, my eyes just died, lol
-
markmcb
haha
-
veg
that's quite enough contrast for the light mode, thanks, lol
-
markmcb
veg: i agree, i need to work on the color palette for dark mode. it's a first pass, best guess. will address it.
-
veg
great work anyhow, thanks for taking that on!
-
veg
really love seeing jails & bastille pushed at the forefront (especially given the active development on bastille the last few months)
-
veg
the light mode is truly more elegant & informative than the current website is!
-
markmcb
thank you, it's great to hear this
-
veg
the header from
docs.freebsd.org is pretty good and would provide a nice addition to your work IMHO (maintaining consistency would be cool as well)
-
markmcb
veg: 100%. you can ignore the header/footer in my mockup. i would integrate this into whatever the desired template is (and i agree the docs template is nice and clean)

martinrame
hi, in a VNET jail I need to add a 2nd IP (an alias) and a static route to re0, how can I do that?. I used route add -net 192.168.20.254 192.168.20.2
-
martinrame
But that added that route to lo0 instead of re0
-
martinrame
BTW, netstat -nr shows all routes pointing to lo0 Netif, is that correct?
-
CrtxReavr
markmcb, it's ``netstat -rn`` you savage! Everyone knows that.
-
CrtxReavr
o_O
-
CrtxReavr
Sorry, markmcb - nick complete fail.
-
markmcb
CrtxReavr: no worries, i've been called worse, lol
-
CrtxReavr
Linux fanboi!
-
markmcb
haha, you know how to hit where it hurts
-
badkat
markmcb: did you solve the setup problem?
-
markmcb
badkat, current revision:
freebsd.markmcb.com
-
badkat
lol i wanted to quote the vnet guy xD
-
badkat
he left the channel it seems
-
badkat
ok lets see :O
-
badkat
yes! the beastie is godlike
-
badkat
haha that bastille sponsorship is crazy tho
-
badkat
along the netflix lines that is fun :)
-
beastie
thanks!!!!! :)
-
badkat
lmao :-)

getz
markmcb: on the landingpage "become a commiter" might be a bit too specific? Become a contributor and linking to the developers handbook might be more useful
-
markmcb
getz: thanks. will tweak
-
voy4g3r2
markmcb: beautiful layout, liking it a lot.. i did notice when you hover over titlebar links.. it "looks" like color changes.. not sure if that was expected. The links at the bottom, my mouse changes to a | and not a "finger" pointer to denote link.
-
voy4g3r2
i am also viewing this on a mac.. so not sure if it is my old computer
-
voy4g3r2
sorry.. the news section on the lower level.. maybe it is just a placeholder and i am "over-reacting"
-
markmcb
yes, the hover color change is intentional, but i'm not tied to it if folks feel it's distracting. the links at the bottom do that because they're empty placeholder links. they wouldn't do that in a production setting. i just copied the text over to mock up the section.
-
markmcb
i'm impressed you noticed!
-
markmcb
i'll make those links functional to remove the confusion
-
voy4g3r2
its all good
-
voy4g3r2
i figure you would expect the top half to be looked at.. so i flip it on its head.. start from the bottom up
-
voy4g3r2
it is like those images.. did you notice the stormtrooper but you get distracted with a woman or man
-
voy4g3r2
maybe wrong analogy.. it is like getting cut off on the road.. people expect you to flip them off.. so you just clap and laugh.. it throws them off ;)
-
markmcb
haha, links are updated now
-
voy4g3r2
i like the netflix touch also, would they be "opposed" to displaying their logo? maybe a sanity check
-
markmcb
i'm sure someone with a legal background could weigh in on specifics, but in general i think it's fine as long as we don't put words in their mouth, i.e., imply that they say FreeBSD is "the best" ... easy enough to swap it out if there are concerns
-
voy4g3r2
ohh Mkdocs looks real interesting
-
voy4g3r2
i make my notes in obsidian and have been hacking ways to migrate canvas jsoncanvas.org but was struggling with "output"
-
voy4g3r2
i may have to play.. but it is wife date night.. if i see anything else, i will let you know
-
voy4g3r2
nice work
-
markmcb
thanks :)
