-
mns
How long does it take to upgrade from 13.4 to 14.0 ? The second run of 'freebsd-update install' has been running for almost 3 hours now
-
skered
mns: I've seen it take a long time.
-
skered
I would just let it sit.
-
skered
mns: root on zfs?
-
randomuser894879
Hello.
-
randomuser894879
Which cipher does OpenBSD use by default when installing the system with Full Disk Encryption?
-
randomuser894879
I know this channel is for FreeBSD, but I couldn't get the answer I want anywhere else, so I thought that maybe someone here could help me.
-
randomuser894879
After all... I'm talking about a BSD!
-
» duskmoss sighs
-
llua
you could look at the source code
-
randomuser894879
Yeah, but I'm not an experienced programmer.
-
randomuser894879
But thank you.
-
randomuser894879
I'll see what I can do.
-
randomuser894879
I'm leaving now.
-
llua
cya
-
randomuser894879
Thank and have a great day/night.
-
duskmoss
randomuser894879: (did you try openbsd mailing lists?)
-
randomuser894879
duskmoss Yes.
-
LXGHTNXNG
wrong channel?
-
llua
indeed
-
kevans
have to applaud the optimism, though
-
kevans
it wasn't actually /that/ crazy, we just don't know
-
» break19 joins a F-150 channel to ask about a Ram truck. After all, it's a truck!
-
duskmoss
hehe
-
duskmoss
I found it in the code because I got curious. not particularly hard, nice comment. I think if they look (or actually mail the mailing lists) they'll have better luck
-
llua
i only got as far as something called bioctl's -cC option
-
duskmoss
-
LXGHTNXNG
«oh yeah i had a ram with the same problem, to fix it i fribnicated the frooble; no idea if it really fixed because i sold the ram to afford the ford»
-
kevans
the truck analogy is a kind of bad one, imo. it's only been relatively recent that proprietary crap has taken over more of the vehicle and shrunk the pool of knowledge applicable across makes
-
» kevans has a mini-fleet of 90's and early 2000 dodges, but still feels competent when asked to work on a ford of similar vintage
-
mns
skered: yeah its 6 hours now, and yes root is on zfs
-
skered
-
debdrup
or you could use the handbook
-
debdrup
more importantly, do you know what that does?
-
OwlWizard
um is it normal that the freebsd forum wont let you join because the recaptcha wont stop giving you tasks?
-
daemon
OwlWizard, no that is not normal
-
daemon
I just signed in for the first time in years and did not even get a captcha
-
OwlWizard
maybe its because i have so many privacy things in my browser
-
OwlWizard
daemon, im trying to make an account not log in
-
daemon
quickly try it in a secondary browser
-
OwlWizard
ive managed to get it finally
-
OwlWizard
reloaded the page a few times
-
debdrup
kevans: you mean we're crazy enough to answer if we know? :P
-
TommyC
OwlWizard: Maybe you're a bot...programmed to not think you're a bot.

in case you didn't know, euro-bsdcon streams are still live now:

-
debdrup
thanks to 0mp@, i just learned about 'service <serivce> poll' which works like 'service <service> status' but waits until the service stops running
-
debdrup
-
debdrup
the talk by 0mp@ is basically mandatory for anyone working with rc(8)
-
aquamo4k
i missed the beginning but am going to rewind it once I have my coffee made and watch the whole thing
-
debdrup
i learned so many things from that talk
-
debdrup
performance measurements and jailing services are completely new to me
-
armin
debdrup: I purposefully built a dedicated jails host using some cheap Ryzen 5 thinclient at my home
-
armin
debdrup: 10/10 can recommend
-
debdrup
armin: i've been using jails since 2000 when it was added; the jailing services part is <service>_svcj in rc.conf specifically
-
matt0000000
hello!
-
matt0000000
i've been using freebsd for over a month now and its been good. just wanted to share!
-
Yaazkal
matt0000000: welcome!
-
matt0000000
thank you!
-
debdrup
Usually people come here because they have an issue, so it's nice to hear that, occationally
-
cation
who said my name
-
jmnbtslsQE
heh
-
matt0000000
lol
-
matt0000000
any point to not using freebsd13 instead of 14?
-
njn
i mean your going to have the most up to date features
-
shbrngdo
some people prefer using a more 'tested' release, and go for the one prior to the most recent version, but I have not seen any issues in FBSD that might justify that kind of thing since the switch from 4.11 to 5.0 (that was a bit rough).
-
shbrngdo
oh he's off line...
-
njn
ah
-
njn
didnt notice either
-
mns
should I be setting vfs.zfs.dmu_offset_next_sync in my /etc/sysctl.conf file? I am on 14.1-RELEASE-p5. I just migrated from 13.3 -> 13.4 -> 14.0 -> 14.1 in the last 36 hours.
-
ivy
mns: no, the problem requiring that workaround was fixed by
freebsd.org/security/advisories/FreeBSD-EN-23:16.openzfs.asc
-
mns
ivy: ok, that sounds good. thanks for the pointer.
-

yikes, net-mgmt/snmp_exporter is a release from 2021
-
ivy
sysutils/snmp_exporter rather
-
vkarlsen
For some reason, resolvconf runs now and then even though it's disabled in rc.conf. I wonder what's triggering it.
-
vkarlsen
Setting resolvconf=NO in /etc/resolvconf.conf prevents it from nuking resolv.conf, but should it not be sufficient to disable it in rc?
-
jmnbtslsQE
maybe dhclient via /sbin/dhclient-script ?
-
jmnbtslsQE
maybe that would follow the rc.conf variable though. not sure
-
scoobybejesus
if those eurobsd videos have been timestamped somewhere to know what talks are in each of those videos, a link would be awesome. as of now, it's three 7-hour videos
-
Yaazkal
-
duskmoss
I htink that part is new in CURRENT, and not yet in any official RELEASE
-
duskmoss
oop that was in reference to svc_j a while ago
