how can i troubleshoot cron? the command i put in does not seem to be executed, but in the cron log, it shows it runs the command, but the command is partially cut off in the log
-
Kalten
CCLFL_Man: what does your configuration line look like?
-
Kalten
CCFL_Man: your root might receive a mail with output (at least, if the exit code was not `0`—output on `stderr` might trigger that too. Includes environment etc.
-
CCFL_Man
35 19 * * * /usr/local/bin/wget -q -O /home/closet/tivocidcalllog/cidcall.log.`date '+%Y-%m-%d'`
ftp://192.168.0.103/var/log/cidcall.log
-
CCFL_Man
the command works fine run from the shell
-
nacelle
make a wrapper script, call the wrapper script instead of the complex command line
-
nacelle
then you can throw in troubleshooting in the script, like touch a file or whatever
-
Kalten
BTW: in the mail, the environment etc. are in the mail header (X-Cron-Env: entries)
-
CCFL_Man
nacelle: but it should run on its own though
-
CCFL_Man
it's the user cron
-
CCFL_Man
i have sendmail disabled
-
CCFL_Man
so the root account won't receive a mail
-
Kalten
to wrap it is a good idea. is a `wget` stuck? (ttyout or the like?) (e.q. see top)
-
bellhyve
Well it is handy to install dma or something and just get the mail using MAILTO / MAILFROM variables in the crontab. That and a wrapper script. Those are the easy ways to troubleshoot.
-
CCFL_Man
can the wrapper script be a shebang and the command?
-
bellhyve
You bet.
-
rtprio
CCFL_Man: you can't use `` inside a crontab

LXGHTNXNG
ey, this may be a weird one: does the i386 build of freebsd support EFI, or will I only be able to use it on a BIOS-based IA32 system? I don't have anything unusual, this is just for a virtualization use
-
LXGHTNXNG
... is there still an i386 build of freebsd?

now, do I do GPT/BIOS or do I use the classic MBR disklabel? heck, do I use a BSD disklabel on the whole disk, like some kind of maniac?
-
Plasmoduck
MBR
-
LXGHTNXNG
sensible, sensible.
-
LXGHTNXNG
y'know what, it's nothing too production-sensitive, I just want to see what'll happen. I'll try the BSD disklabel first
-
LXGHTNXNG
well, this is going well. I've tried to fire up the memstick image twice now, once as virtio disk and once as USB disk, and seabios isn't having it
-

Got CD?

or try PXE boot
-
LXGHTNXNG
I fired up the bootonly cd and managed, after some hackery, to get a shell on ttyu0

is there anyone manage emails in both cli and graphical client?
-
LXGHTNXNG
mictty: ????
-
mictty
how to do emailing list? I mean I how to organize and read them happily?
-
Plasmoduck
mutt/neomutt?
-
LXGHTNXNG
What mailserver are you using? On my system where I export my mailboxes, I use Dovecot for storage and Nightmare Mail, my own fork of qmail, for federation. Nightmare Mail is also readily compatible with running one's own mailing list service.
-
mictty
LXGHTNXNG: I tried mutt and will try self-hosting server but
-
LXGHTNXNG
When it comes to reading mail locally, I use Heirloom mailx, though I wouldn't call myself a fan; it has to index mail every time I open my maildir
-
mictty
whenever I open my email, it looks so messy I don't want to read email
-
LXGHTNXNG
in my largest maildir, that takes an exceptionally long time.
-
mictty
gmail, mutt, graphical cli whatever
-
Plasmoduck
mictty: use the mutt or neomutt client
-
Plasmoduck
it works in console and terminal
-
Plasmoduck
It's curses based
-
LXGHTNXNG

mictty: I tend to use Thunderbird if I have an IMAP server I can point it to.
-
Plasmoduck
mictty: you need to sort out your config file or inbox
-
mictty
I used thunderbird as well. the gmail syncing was good
-
mictty
but I need some good organization scheme
-
LXGHTNXNG
organization?
-
mictty
sorry, *Organizing
-
mictty
my bad sense of noun
-
LXGHTNXNG
:/
-
LXGHTNXNG
mictty: I mean, what do you mean by an organizing/organization scheme?
-
LXGHTNXNG
do you mean about how it organizes into several directories?
-
parv
Perhaps you would need set up filters to shove mail in different folders^Wlabels
-
LXGHTNXNG
parv: IMAP does have a concept of different folders, which on my system are represented as separate maildirs
-
LXGHTNXNG
as I use dovecot for storage
-
parv
LXGHTNXNG, Well, mictty is talking about "gmail"
-
mictty
it is just a high level idea. I sometimes decide to keep on track of some mailing
-
mictty
then some month later forget or decide not to
-
mictty
then such stuff piles up
-
mictty
then disaster
-
parv
Add a filter to find email of X days old & delete as you are not reading them anyway
-
LXGHTNXNG
right...............
-
LXGHTNXNG
parv: I've often read very old emails
-
LXGHTNXNG
so, that's not really a choice
-
LXGHTNXNG
one could separate by source domain, although that is spoofable?
-
mictty
parv: I agree. Sometimes I need to let them go.
-
parv
LXGHTNXNG, Let me rephrase, "mictty: Add a filter to find email ..."
-
mictty
parv: I just need to give up for those emails
-
parv
mictty, You could also reduce the lists that you are subscribed to
-
LXGHTNXNG
or divert them into a separate directory, as I do
-
mictty
parv: so one should design to have sort of expiration duration?
-
mictty
parv: like milk?
-
parv
mictty, Certainly if one cannot keep up with the rate of incoming emails
-
cpet
rules
-
cpet

-
mictty
LXGHTNXNG: I sometimes read old emails for like signed documents or receipt
-

-

I just got a pair of hdds. I will try zfs
-
mictty
then I will store email
-
mictty
then I will organize them and read them happily
-
LXGHTNXNG
right. it was the wrong bootstraps. you want /boot/boot for a bsdlabel.
-
LXGHTNXNG
remember that if you ever have a BIOS system and you are using a bsd disklabel rather than the usual mbr disklabel.
-
cpet
any reason why you want to store emails rather than just view them online ?
-
LXGHTNXNG
cpet: somebody has to store them for you for you to be able to view them on the Web

Title: GitHub - machyve/xhyve: xhyve, a lightweight OS X virtualization solution

xhyve is sadly busted at the moment because of changes to the MacOS network stack. It's been forked to "HyperKit," which is what powers newer versions of MacOS Docker. It would be nice if those folks sent some of their good work back upstream to bhyve!
-
debdrup
It would've been quite neat if the other BSDs had adopted bhyve instead of reinventing the wheel, but that's not what happened.

-
ASHER
i told to you i try write cpan install Term::ReadLine::Perl and this what i get
-
rtprio
ASHER: usually this means you need to either update your system, or build the port from scratch (rather than using the package)
-
ASHER
but this a system freebsd 12.2
-
ASHER
:S
-
rtprio
right. build the port from scratch to reinstall and it should work
-
CrtxReavr
Pretty sure 12.2 needs to be upgraded.
-
rtprio
it doesn't have to be
-
CrtxReavr
Well, it is unsupported.
-
rtprio
yeah, he should upgrade
-
mason
There's a p5-Term-ReadLine-Perl package anyway.
-
mason
But enough CPAN and it may be unsalveable anyway.
-
rtprio
not sure what that package has to do with anything
-
mason
unsalvageable*
-
mason
rtprio: It's a mystery, yeah.
-
ASHER
not working
-
ASHER
i install that and again i get error
-
xmj
start by upgrading your OS, ASHER
-
ASHER
to 13?
-
xmj
there is a reason it's considered "UNSUPPORTED"
-
xmj
ASHER: 12.3 or 13.1
-
paulf
ASHER your problem looks like you are trying to run something built with a more recent version than yours
-
ASHER
ok
-
ASHER
i wiil try but i see also problem too 13
-
paulf
as a rule a newer OS will continue to run old software but an old OS won't be able to run newer versions
-
mason
ASHER: You're undefined symbol issue indicates that something disagrees with that library, or that that library depends on something unavailable or something of the sort. It's not coherent and matching, and it all needs to be. Programs are built with conceptions of certain symbols that require that the linked libraries match.
-
ASHER
this mean i need install c?
-
mason
ASHER: Some of this might come from CPAN being confused about versions. In general where possible you're safest using system packages (ports/pkgs in this case) to get the Perl libraries you want, as they will match.
-
mason
ASHER: Vaguely related, if you DO need CPAN for stuff, you'd be well advised to make heavy use of local::lib, as that'll contain potentially conflicting sets of CPAN-originated packages.
-
mason
FWIW, there's a package for it as well: p5-local-lib
-
ASHER
ok
-
mason
This is the sanest way to move forward, as then if you need to migrate your code, you'll have a small, contained local::lib tree and a known set of system packages.
-
ASHER
ok i will try thanks
-
mason
That said, upgrading to a supported FreeBSD is a lovely idea. For 12, that'd be 12.4.
-
mason
Sorry, 12.3, although 12.4 is Real Soon Now.

Was a huge difference in features between 3.x & 4.x, plus there was all the Matt Dillon fuckery that head to the split in the project to FreeBSD & DragonflyBSD.
