Does FreeBSD have anything similar to Linux's /proc/pressure/memory or MacOS's NOTE_VM_PRESSURE, where a program can be notified when the system/cgroup is low on memory

Heavy CVE morning
-
rwp
Expect it to be a heavy CVE season.
-
rwp
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.
-
joemie
Already updated. What bugs me more is that Salt doesn't seem to work with python 3.12
-
rwp
So why is python always breaking backward compatibility?
-
joemie
because we Dutch like to complicate things? Not sure if Guido still s involved, though
-
LXGHTNXNG
joemie: I can't imagine you are tellng the truth about your people when you say that.
-
lts
Which CVEs are you talking about? Nothing here since day before yesterday
freebsd.org/security/advisories
-
sbr
lts: there are 13 from yesterday?
-
sbr
30th sorry
-
sbr
I only saw them this morning
-
lts
No new CVEs then, good. That's always better
-
sbr
I assume the flood is LLM accelerated
-
joemie
LXGHTNXNG: just kidding, I'm uncomplicated, as many other Dutch people
-
LXGHTNXNG
joemie: I think you are also doing yourself a disservice. Nobody likes to overcomplicate things, but people are complicated.
-
joemie
is this really a channel where non-native English speakers are corrected in a private chat by 'super-humans'?
-
isley
wut
-
joemie
my thought as well
-
joemie
I got a free language lesson from Gedge (now on my ignore list)
-
antranigv
lol
-
» Gedge shrugs.
-
sbr
I can barely speak English and its my first language, wouldn't sweat it. Not helped by my incompetent typing and dyslexic brain that has literally no idea how words are supposed to be spellled.
-
Gedge
Mea culpa. I offered an improvement, nothing more (no mention of super-human). I misread the audience, clearly, and regret trying to be of help.
-
antranigv
Gedge there are two types of people in this chat, and none of them like these kind of messages. and there's me, feel free to do that with me :P
-
Gedge
antranigv: thanks :)
-
makr
why don't the instructions here mention to reboot after "Apply all Pending Patches"
-
makr
-
makr
also why "shutdown -r +10min" instead of "shutdown -r now"?
-
makr
also never seen this "Upgrade the Boot Loader" section before, it's new?
-
isley
why not 2 min? why not 7? why not 143 seconds?
-
makr
no, the question is why > 0, not why 10
-
isley
the point i'm making is that these are entirely arbitrary and you can rely on your own judgement.
-
makr
but i have no idea why a delay is needed therefore I can't judge how much is necessary :)
-
sbr
makr: It gives users on a mainframe time to save their work
-
makr
:D
-
makr
anyone running freebsd on mainframes?
-
sbr
All that halt messaging stuff comes from those days AFAIK. Way back in the day of shell servers we used to use whatever that intra messaging system is called
-
sbr
makr: s/mainframe/multi-user systems
-
makr
gotcha. i thought the delay might be needed so the services shutdown more gracefully or something
-
sbr
Setting your .plan, using finger. Its all unix baggae (or joy) which doesnt make sense to 99% of people anymore
-
makr
finger is cool, webfinger is a reboot. but i've always liked the idea. that web is gone though...
-
makr
or maybe it will come back once all the major platforms are full slopified
-
sbr
I run a gohper server for a while (few months ago)
-
sbr
Went down a small web rabit hole. gohper/nex/gemini
-
sbr
ran*
-
ant-x
^ Good it was not a large rabid hole: FakeBook/Twitter/Reddit .
-
makr
hah
-
sbr
hah, no never used any of those
-
ant-x
sbr, This is why move for making the FreeBSD mailing lists more consipicious in MoTD: <
bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=295526> .
-
sbr
I have to admit that I never, ever, read the MOTD. I used to always have fortune run and read that but not for a while
-
rtprio
... yeah, i feel like that change is meaningless
-
makr
+1 on the change to the community link
-
makr
i never use the forums, but i use this
-
sbr
the sentiment is sound, community is good, just don't know if anyone else reads that. I feel like if you are reading the MoTD, you already know this exists
-
mason
makr: The instructions for updating the bootloader might be new, but the need to do so isn't.
-
sbr
My maniac attempt at community (without joining reddit/discord whatever) was trying to start a in person social network
kilta.io
-
sbr
FreeBSD is obviously a pre seeded interest
-
makr
mason: oh...i've never done it
-
makr
it seems quite a few changes have been made to the instructions since 14.4 -
freebsd.org/releases/14.4R/installation
-
mason
makr: It only matters when something changes with, for example, ZFS such that the bootloader needs to be taught new structures.
-
makr
ohh i see
-
makr
sbr: neat idea!
-
sbr
It is, but it needs more than 15 people to be useful on a global scale :-)
-
makr
yes, that's the difficulty with social networks, the network part :)
-
sbr
Boot strapping a social network without burning millions turns out to be tricky
-
makr
haha
-
sbr
Especially one that intentionally had no revenue model
-
sbr
has*
-
mason
There's always the Fediverse. Lots of BSD folks on the Fediverse.
-
makr
i forget i have a fediverse account, and bluesky
-
sbr
Yeah, I should try. The whole twitter / twitter'esque experience never clicked.
-
makr
but yeah i've seen nice posts on there that were linked elsewhere
-
sbr
my other alt semi social network is
tuhat.net which is very untwitter, need to write 1000 words to post.
-
sbr
I looked at adding activityPub but its too social media for me, tuhat has no lies, no public comments
-
sbr
no likes* no lies, probably lots of those
-
mzar
are you guys discussing how to promote FreeBSD using those networks ?
-
LXGHTNXNG
don't think so
-
sbr
mzar: Always
-
mzar
very nice !
-
f451
sbr: thought for a second you meant motd on installed systems LOL.
-
f451
I use motd there like a notes of what was last done with the system like upgrades etc
-
f451
i only ever read channel motd when joining for the first time, most other channels seem to not update their motd at all
-
rtprio
i use puppet to update them:
drop.17es.dev/-LnikbPFVnD
-
sbr
rtprio: nice box, what is it?
-
rtprio
an old r710
-
rtprio
if it was ddr5 instead of ddr3 i could sell the ram and put my kid through college
-
sbr
Cool, Ive a pair of R640's
-
sbr
Yeah, I was scouring the local after market here and have 382GB in both machines
-
rwp
makr, On today's modern rented VPS virtual machines we have multiple people logged into various servers at the same time. In those cases I always give them +5m or at least to know the system is rebooting. I try not to pull the rug out from under them without warning.
-
rwp
It's a shared system thing. Which most people working on their desktop sandbox might never experience. But it is a use case. Not just an obsolete mainframe thing.
-
sbr
I found a couple bundles of 32gb DDR4 ECC chips for ~$70 each
-
topcat001
that's amazing
-
ant-x
Hello, all. What can I do to prevent an HDD from stoppiong for power saving? I have tried a) camcontrol apm da0 -l 245 and b) camcontrol apm da0 -- to no avail.
-
ant-x
-1s/245/254
-
ant-x
^ c) camcontrol standby da0 -t 0 d) camcontrol idle da0 -t 0 -- no effect.
-
rtprio
is there a smartctl command to do it
-
ant-x
My HDD is: WDC WD10 05FBYZ-01YCBB3
-
ant-x
rtprio, I don't know, will look into it.
-
ant-x
rtprio, no, I don't think there is such a smartctl(8) option.
-
rtprio
does it spin down or what
-
rtprio
and take forever to come back, with a few command timeouts?
-
ant-x
It spings down with a funny sound, after several minutes of inactivity. It spins back up at first access.
-
ant-x
No errors.
-
rtprio
what does camcontrol powermode for the device tell you?
-
ant-x
camcontrol: Can't get ATA command status
-
ant-x
^ the HDD is connected via a USB adapters, if that matters.
-
rtprio
oh, it might yeah
-
rtprio
i wonder if the enclosure is doing it for you
-
ant-x
It has been the same with a couple of different enclosures, reportedly good ones. And my PC has no direct SATA port. I'll have to find a way to repeat the tests with the bare HDD.
-
rwp
ant-x, I would have said that "camcontrol apm da0 -l 254" would be the equivalent and should work.
