vkarlsen
danmcd: Thanks for all you have done, and best of luck going forward! Looks like you'll be in good company
-
pjustice
And with limited LLM slop, apparently :)
-
nikolam
danmcd, oh no. really ;,, Where are you going, then?
-
nikolam
danmcd, you wer not only employee, you make me feel you are an community member and maintainer. Who is going to be replacing you? Any contact as your replacement from inside SmartOS team?
-
nikolam
Still have Triton "Office hours" reminder on Discord , plus all those recorded events on youtube :

The SmartOS bench has depth. I see two already in the list of members. And I'm not leaving greater-illumos.
-
nikolam
Always hoping once it would continue :P
-
nikolam
danmcd, :)
-
danmcd
I'm only leaving SmartOS & Triton as $DAYJOB .
-
nikolam
danmcd, you are a great man, to say the least :P Hope your day job will be challenging and interesting
-
danmcd
TY, that's WAY too kind, and I expect new $DAYJOB will be both.
-
nikolam
danmcd, any info on Briana?
blog.brianewell.com stopped weorkign rather recently and it is full with in-depth interesting articles.
-
nikolam
No really, those brave and eloquent Office Hours series and your omnipresent positive impact is to be remembered.
-
danmcd
URL isn't her. Different person.
-
nikolam
that blog.brianewell.com from different person, is behind Cloudflare it seems.

Hopefully @danmcd will never have to look at i40e code ever again 😂
-
danmcd
Well... the good news is this affects all of illumos-land, so @jbk is on the case. Quite literally, and @tsoome has the reproducer in his lab.
-
danmcd
There's a good change fenix illumos#18075 lands in illumos-joyent soon.
-
fenix
FEATURE 18075: i40e could be smarter allocating memory for packets (New)
-
fenix
-
jbk
i kinda hope ice is the last NIC intel makes for a _long_ time :)
-
jbk
i'm working on the RSS bits, which (unlike i40e) require programming the packet engine to determine the type of packet, which byte offsets to extract and then feed into the hashing hardware to select the RX ring
-
jbk
i40e by comparison feels quaint :)
-
danmcd
I'll take, "Damning with faint praise," for $200, Ken!
-
jbk
i mean, i'm sure if you take advantage of all the bits, it's really low overhead for essentially having a bunch of virtual NICs for VMs
-
jbk
but it'd be nice if there was just a 'simple' mode
-
jbk
like give me some rings and go
-
kebe
Don't let danmcd's head get any more inflated!
-
danmcd
Trust that guy ^^^
