there is a package pkgsrc.se/lang/zig

but it's missing from pkgsrc.smartos.org/packages/Linux/el7/trunk/x86_64/All

I wonder is this something I don't know (like a feature) or rather a bug :)

the el7 builds are terrible, for example the latest: us-central.manta.mnx.io/pkgsrc/publ…6_64/20230719.2238/meta/report.html

the problem is it ships with an old gcc that can no longer compile modern software

given it's EOL soon I'll probably just turn it off

(1) Are the builds for EL8 and EL9 available by chance?

not yet, I'm waiting on netpgp to be fixed so that I can ship signed packages

(2) [ jperkin, you might have been answering this already but I don't remember ] Why not build and use the newer GCC from own repos then?

it's possible but that comes with its own drawbacks, you now have to ship the gcc runtime linked against every package, and you also need to install the gcc package for every build, making everything considerably slower

it's what we do for SmartOS builds, but it makes them about twice as slow

it's unable to decrypt pgp packets generated on newer Linux, I don't know the exact details
