so now I got a vps at netcup running the latest omnios version. However I am facing an issue, so far I have used zones only in my own lan, wehre ip addresses were abundant, but now i don't have unlimited acess to ip adresses, at least not global routable adresses. Question: what kind of IP's can I add to my zones now?

can I define private IP's for my zones and get them routed trough the GZ to the internet?

extrowerk: I believe you can, You'd need some sort of interface on the GZ with a private address, then attach the zones to that interface, then use IPF to setup nat on the GZ.

I think you need an etherstub for the private (host only) interface - `man dladm` might well be your friend in getting the network bits setup

tux0r to be fair at this day and age there are a lot of good options. weird hardware? NetBSD. simplicity? OpenBSD. Robustness? FreeBSD. Innovation? OmniOS/illumos. useless bloat? Windows. Useful bloat? Linux. the list goes on.

when nas/storage is discussed, mostly, as 'the only sane way to use zfs' :)

well that limits you to FreeBSD and illumos by default

antranigv: openbsd is more robust than freebsd, IMO. i do, indeed, consider to try netbsd on a server some day, now that i have finally figured out how to use it on a laptop (i failed a few years ago and i had not touched it until this year)
