I'll be giving a talk about OmniOS tomorrow at a local event. I know the history of illumos pretty well, as well as the history of OmniOS (and OmniTI). My plan was to talk about ZFS, Zones, DTrace, SMF, FMA and common tasks and how they compare to their Linux and FreeBSD counterparts (prstat instead of top, etc). Anything a n00b like me might've missed? :)

Oh right, I forgot! Armenia's telecom is a Solaris-heavy environment. OmniOS still has Solaris 10 compat layer, right?

antranigv: yes, we still have the solaris10 brand, and it's still maintained and works well

They will be happy to hear that. everyone wants to ditch Oracle and no one wants Linux and they are not aware of illumos.

Although most applications from Solaris 10 should just work anyway due to binary compatibility

um, omnios instructions and env files need some love:/

openjdk11 is missing jre/lib/amd64/server tree to be usable for illumos build

same for openjdk17.

tsoome: the jre was removed entirely from java many releases ago

that sounds like the reason, except that gate does not know about it:)

We build with jdk11 all the time - the example file is /opt/onbld/env/omnios-illumos-gate or downloads.omnios.org/env

You need omnios-illumos-gate for building gate, and omnios-illumos-omnios for building illumos-omnios

I think it's confusing that we ship the stock "illumos" one straight out of gate. I think that's optimised for OpenIndiana
