i come from linux world, i'd compiled kernels but i never build a illumos system until now

psarria: omnios.org/dev/build_instructions.html has the same instructions you mentioned but with more details. you'll likely then have to make sure that illumos-omnios is your fork and the packages are located somewhere under that build tree and can be installed into a new boot environment see omni's usage notes and manpage for more details and istructions
