Is there a good "meta" package to install to get all the bhyve stuff?

zonecfg is saying brand bhyve is unkonwn. I installed system/bhyve

pkg install brand/bhyve

zadm will prompt and do that for you if you happen to use that tool

Huh. Never heard of zadm, but haven't done that much with zones.

The default installation does not have a lot of the brands in because updates there generally require a reboot on update.

zadm is an omnios-specific tool. It's not required to use anything though, but it's convenient

Do I _have_ to deal with zones? (eg. if I don't particularly care about strong isolation etc.)

No, you can run bhyve directly in the GZ

It's usually easier to run each VM in its own zone though, but definitely not required.
