if the state of the art didn't have to be "look like linux real good so all the upstream stuff works", maybe someone could do it like, once.

the problem is Linux is a quickly moving target in the graphics arena, so it's a project that never ends, unless you want to be stuck only supporting graphics devices no longer sold since they have such short product lifecycles

somedays I think you could just run Linux in a VM and give it full access to the graphics HW, but that leads to a path of "What is the point in still trying to keep a non-Linux kernel running under that? Who needs two kernels when one will do?"
