I'm personally coming down on the side of "usage message" as we provide a safe default in the stock env file, and "usage message by accident" has been the effective behavior for ~14 years..

tbh, the default should be what is expected for submitting patches, so that you should not acquire PhD to run nightly when you are just starting to contribute.
