hello! i am looking to try out illumos on desktop and am currently looking for a good distribution. which one would you guys recommend? i've heard of openindiana and it seems to be pretty good but i can't get it to boot off of usb and i've heard the ips packaging format is hell
-
kantraa
i am familiar with linux and have dabbled in freebsd also
-
kantraa
anyone here?
-
nomad
tap tap ... is this thing on yet?
-
nomad
kantraa, not sure how much of what I typed got out.
-
kantraa
huh?
-
kantraa
all i see is "tap tap ... is this thing on yet?"
-
kantraa
did you send something else?
-
nomad
I updated my firewall and saw your question at the same time.
-
kantraa
o
-
nomad
anyway, what I was trying to say was there are multiple distros, each one emphasizes different things.
-
nomad
OmniOS, for example, tends to focus on zones and bhyve and such.
-
nomad
but you can use any of them for 'general purpose' things.
-
nomad
$job[1] uses OmniOS for NFS & SMB/CIFS file services backed by ZFS.
-
kantraa
how hard is it to install and set up X on Tribblix?
-
nomad
(We completely ignore the zones stuff.)
-
nomad
that would be a good question for ptrbble but, like most people here, he's probably off enjoying his Friday evening/Saturday.
-
nomad
This isn't a great time to expect people to be hanging out here :)
-
kantraa
fair
-
nomad
I'm only here because I noticed there was activity in the channel while I was updating my firewall.
-
nomad
and I'm about to step away now that it is back online.
-
kantraa
what's the best time to be here?
-
nomad
work days in Europe/US seem to have the most coverage but it's hard to say specifically.
-
nomad
this is a very global channel.
-
kantraa
thanks!
-
kantraa
its like 4am for me because ive been trying to boot openindiana since 2am lol
-
kantraa
i think 1am actually

nomad
Looks like I need to restart my IRC proxy so I'm going to vanish again, brb.
-
nomad
and now that I'm back.. I'm going back to not-computering for the evening.
-
kantraa
have a nice day!
-
kantraa
im going to bed
-
nomad
Hope to see you here Monday. :)
-
nomad
sleep well.

nikolam

kantraa
if i installed tribblix would i be able to run pre-11 solaris packages on it?
-
sjorge
I’m happy illumos comunity didnt move to discord 😅
-
sjorge
IRC has it’s issues but it works well for what it is
-
kantraa
discord is way easier to use but also has a slew of other problems
-
kantraa
if i installed tribblix would i be able to run pre-11 solaris packages on it? i honestly just wanna run IE for UNIX
-
wiedi
kantraa: while backwards compat is usually pretty good I'm not sure it goes that far back. Probably best to just try and see how it goes

drscream
did somebody know if svccfg is able to addpg for dependent (not dependency) to a smf service? If I use addpg dependent is creats a <property_group> not a <dependent> entry to the service, which than isn't working as expected :)
-
rmustacc
makr: Goes in a combo of /usr/xpg4/bin/ and /usr/has/bin/
-
makr
thanks rmustacc
-
ptribble
kantraa: you should be able to run applications from Solaris 10 or earlier without too many problems.
-
ptribble
Actually, going further back can be easier in terms of compatibility, simply because in earlier releases there was less to be compatible with
-
ptribble
Although for things like old web browsers, finding a website that's compatible with a really old browser is likely to be a bit of a problem
-
jbk
drscream: you might be able to create a profile that you can apply to create the relationship
-
ptribble
I ran a 2010 copy of Opera recently and, as you might expect, it couldn't connect to most sites using https
-
ptribble
Although it didn't do that bad a job rendering the few it could reach
-
ptribble
Wasn't IE for Solaris only available for SPARC, though?
-
jbk
that's my recollection
-
jbk
IIRC, it would only use a single core as well because solaris couldn't 'properly' do SMP (according to MS).. or something silly like that
-
ptribble
ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped
-
ptribble
That's the installer, at any rate.

[illumos-gate] 14736 zfs: Improve sorted scan memory accounting -- Alexander Motin <mav⊙Fo>
-
drscream
jbk: so you're idea would be to create a profile which reflect the dependent based on the services which need to be started? so list both services in the profile?
-
jclulow
drscream: Yes you can basically list any service in the profile and just make targetted adjustments
-
tsoome
jclulow have you seen (on vbox) Jul 6 16:33:51 oi-server usba: [ID 691482 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@0,0/pci8086,1e31@c (xhci0): Connecting device on port 1 failed
-
jclulow
I have not! I try to avoid virtualbox, it's kind of a mess
-
tsoome
:)
-
drscream
jclulow / jbk that works, thanks a lot :)
-
jclulow
awesome!
