jclulow: a big thanks

for Oxide Hardware, how is it different from general Server, like DELL server? is there any docs? bye the way, what’s your specific switches, I just want to find out and verify better database solution (mostly is PostgreSQL), best wishes

tozhu: A fair few things. We've built our own service processor (SP), instead of an IPMI/etc BMC; we've built our own root of trust (ROT) instead of a TPM; we've removed all the UEFI firmware so systems boot somewhat differently to traditional PC servers

It's all been designed to work as an integrated whole rack. The switches are based on Tofino 2 chips, but all of the control stuff is custom and intended to be driven automatically by our control plane software etc.

Cool !
-
jclulow
Thanks! It's been a lot of fun -- but we're really just getting started!
-
jclulow
But yeah, I'm not sure our control plane software is ever going to be useful outside of that hardware
-
tozhu
do you support OS/LX vm? I read your docs, seem just bhyve is supported
-
jclulow
Yeah it's all HVMs, we're not exposing zones to end users
-
tozhu
okay, hope it could support general server, and can run database application with high performance with the advance storage feacure, esp there is no RDMA on high speed NIC
-
tozhu
acutally, I just want to test crucible for database

jclulow, Thank you

You're welcome!

I poked around at work, no X722 anywhere, it was worth a shot.

sjorge
Not that I could get time with one if there was but still

danmcd
sjorge: You *have* an X722, just the mobo one, right?

rzezeski - nice! The drink must have helped.

I have a Radeon RX 6600 but I don't know if it is supported by illumos
-
nomad
I missed some context, X722 what?
-
sjorge
danmcd: yeah, i. was

sjorge
looking for a pcie one

sjorge
that wouldn't break bank to use for testing
-
danmcd
Oh yeah. Good luck... AIUI the 700 (and 800) series of NICs are 4-figure beasts designed to compete against Mellanox/nVidia's 4-figure beasts and Chelsio's ones.
-
danmcd
(Act. 800 series... 700 series tops out at 40Gbit)
-
danmcd
You shouldn't need to break the bank.
-
danmcd
That's ostensibly the job of vendors with paying customers. :)
