_Posterdati_
hi
-
_Posterdati_
please help, I have an asus k55v (intel i5 ivy-bridge) running freebsd 15.0, how can I check cpu fan speed? Thanks!
-
_Posterdati_
?
-
tsoome
did you use google? "how to get cpu fan speed from freebsd" ?
-
Reinhilde
_Posterdati_, have you ever on any other OS been able to get the CPU fan speed on that machine?
-
Reinhilde
tsoome, that search query is worse than useless and could cause false hope
-
Reinhilde
`coretemp` will give you CPU core temperature
-
polarian
iirc fan speed requires drivers, so it depends on the device
-
polarian
I believe it works fine on thinkpads, but for other devices YMMV
-
polarian
besides the EC usually handles the fan speeds, some devices allow you to adjust this within the uefi/bios

kevans: sorry to ping you, your talk for the devsummit, what specifically about jails will you be talking about, im curious :)
-
kevans
polarian: TBD, but mostly going through implementation details probably
-
polarian
kevans: interesting, well I would be interested in it, jails are really cool :p
-
kevans
polarian: it was originally a proposal for the conference itself, but it got rejected and a talk for the devsummit audience will look a little difference
-
kevans
different
-
polarian
I spent yesterday installing packet tracer on freebsd, by jailing bhyve and then running ubuntu in the vm, and then running a vnc server, and using packet tracer over vnc with two levels of isolation because I wouldn't trust cisco even if they paid me
-
kevans
ah, i should add a note about jailed bhyve in there
-
polarian
make distribution DESTDIR=/path/to/jail <-- also this!! someone (maybe you) had to point out that distribution is needed instead of installworld for jail
-
polarian
a while ago...
-
kevans
that sounds like the kind of thing i'd point out if someone was wondering why their config files weren't populated
-
polarian
kevans: bcr emailed me asking if I wanted to do my rejected talk at the devsummit, did he do the same to you? ;p
-
kevans
yep :-)
-
polarian
lol
-
polarian
so many good talks going in the bin :c
-
kevans
i agreed on the terms that he's free to bump my talk if they run out of slots and someone else wants one
-
polarian
someone needs to give mischa and friends a nudge for another BSDNL (however you are US)
-
polarian
kevans: did you go to BSDCan?
-
kevans
yeah, this will be my first trip to europe since... 2024? when Euro was in Vienna
-
kevans
yep
-
polarian
I gotta see if I can get a talk in BSDCan next yr, I want to go
-
polarian
hard to find confs when unemployed :p
-
kevans
it's another great experience
-
polarian
s/find/fund/
-
kevans
well, also consider applying for a travel grant through the Foundation
-
polarian
ah I forgot they have that
-
polarian
For Europe its easy to do it cheaply, as I usually tag on seeing friends with confs, and get cheapo train tickets to go between countries, and then yeah.
-
polarian
cheap airbnb/hostel and then yeah :p
-
kevans
they're in kind of high demand, but it's worth applying if the alternative is not going
-
polarian
yeah, I would love the chance to speak at any BSD conf
-
polarian
I just gotta do something really interesting first :p
-
polarian
my talks tend to be a tad bland
-
kevans
same
-
polarian
like the talk I submitted to EuroBSDCon is just me yapping about messaging protocols and ports :p
-
polarian
obviously thats what I find fun :p
-
polarian
why is everything now smashed with anubis
-
polarian
I want to search bugzilla, nope anubis will max out my cpu for 10 seconds, check a commit? ditto
-
polarian
how is this a solution to bots?
-
alem
how do i enable pf on a vnet jail? i made it with bastille create -V and it says:
-
alem
Enabling pfpfctl: DIOCADDRULE: Operation not permitted
-
alem
and /etc/rc.d/pf: WARNING: Unable to load /etc/pf.conf.
-
polarian
alem: I believe you need to make sure the /etc/devfs.conf unhides /dev/pf
-
polarian
but yeah this is usually down to devfs issues
-
polarian
and devfs is quite frankly, a pain in the arse.
-
alem
shit
-
alem
any work around?
-
polarian
alem: I assume by editing your devfs, or does bastille do that!?
-
polarian
idk
-
polarian
I just use jails directly
-
alem
you mean editing /etc/devfs.conf on the jail or host? i tried adding: "add path pf unhide" on the jail's /etc/devfs.conf but the issue persists
-
alem
this is so annoying
-
polarian
-
polarian
thats my devfs rules for a vm I use for kotlin dev
-
polarian
jailed bhyve
-
polarian
pf works just fine within the jail
-
polarian
I always found the devfs rules to... not do what I want it to do
-
alem
honestly that looks so confusing to me lol
-
alem
never touched devfs before

Anubis is negligible: "In fact, I don???t think we reach a single cent per month in compute costs until several million sites have deployed Anubis. I???m just not convinced this math works??? this is literally nothing for a soulless AI vendor with a monthly cloud services budget in the 8 figures."
-
mns
I switched from Bastille to jails because bastille wraps around so much stuff it used to get hard to understand what it was doing.
-
mns
I had also tried cbsd as well
-
alem
mns: yeah i was thinking about doing that too, but bastille is just so convenient and easy to use i couldn't bother
-
nimaje
alem: the host has unhide it, you wouldn't want to allow a jail to give itself access to your firewall and devices
-
alem
nimaje: makes sense
-
mns
alem: I just ended up creating a template file and a Makefile. The Makefile just creates a new jail by copying the template file, replacing certain placeholders, and done. My jail needs are simple, hence I can do that.
-
alem
mns: that sounds really clean. Why a makefile tho? wouldn't a script be easier?
-
polarian
whatever floats your boat usually
-
polarian
bsdmake is technically scripting anyways
-
Reinhilde
everythng is scripting
-
mns
alem: yes could have done scripting, but make works just as well.
-
alem
fair
-
mns
I thought evertything was an object :-)
-
alem
i have so much to learn still
-
alem
the more i understand stuff the more i realize i don't know shit
-
mns
I've been using make since about 1988. I prefer Make over other tools like Ant, Maven, Gradle, etc.
-
alem
maven gave me nightmares
-
gemelen
make is universal enough to run things, but it's not always the ultimate tool in a particular case
-
mns
agreed gemelen
-
gemelen
using in jvm world isn't anything good (touching the other build tools mentioned)
-
Reinhilde
as time passes, the change of you programming exponentially closes in on 1
-
alem
after setting securelevel to 1 on my vnet jail pf is finally working. Is it a dumb idea to do so? I honestly have no idea what it does, but it works
-
rtprio
man 7 securelevel
-
rtprio
but no, not a dumb thing to do
-
boru
I run most of my jails on level 2

hi
-
alem
can someone suggest me a reliable temporary file host (something with expiring downloads) that i can host on my freebsd server?
-
drathir_tor
alem: not per se to files (even if support them) but check privatebin...
-
alem
drathir_tor: oh i've heard of privatebin, didn't know it supported files
-
alem
i can't seem to find any option to upload files, are you sure it's a feature?
-
drathir_tor
alem: simple tool but useful yes its allow embedding the files...
-
drathir_tor
alem: at right top of screen left next to the "Format:" of text there should be "Attach a file" ;)
-
alem
oh yeah, it's exactly what i needed thank you so much!
-
alem
i actually had to enable that in the config file
-
drathir_tor
alem: np yw ;)
-
drathir_tor
alem: also little tip bc it require js in browser something like pbcli or other clients could e useful from console to access pastes...
-
alem
drathir_tor: mhh yeah, actually It's great for sending code but for files it can be a little unconvenient, I was looking for something like temp dot sh, which you can interact via curl really easily and fast
-
drathir_tor
alem: i see and yes thats true curl is more common obviousbly, however with pbcli You can as well upload files from cli/console too...
-
alem
drathir_tor: yeah I know, but i have many devices and having to install pbcli everytime can be a pain. thanks for the tip anyways. i'll be using this as a pastebin, which i also needed
-
alem
i'm looking at 0x0.st, seems pretty cool. But it's not in ports...
-
armin
alem: "gokapi" could be worth trying
-
alem
armin: adding to the list to try, so far I found rustypaste which is in ports and very similar to 0x0
-
armin
alem: ah neat. :)
-
drathir_tor
alem: "problem" with privatebin suppport curl is that data sended is securely encrypted client side... there are 3rd clients which should be possible to just download from Your server if nodejs/python etc present on server...
github.com/PrivateBin/PrivateBin/wiki/Third-party-clients also there few examples of curl supported unencrypted paste services
-
drathir_tor
-
drathir_tor
also from other free online web services for files and pastes i find for fast qurl.sh file.io for files and catbin for unencrypted pastes...
-
armin
Well what can I say? My "workstation" (some almost 10 years old Ryzen 5 tower PC with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon graphics card) works perfectly fine with FreeBSD and MangoWM.
-
alem
drathir_tor mhh very interesting, i'll check everything out tomorrow, thanks
-
armin
I wonder if I have a reasonable chance to get Renoise to work however.
-
alem
armin very cool. first time im hearing mangowm tho
-
armin
alem: It's pretty decent, I was able to adapt all the keyboard shortcuts I'm used to from DWM, so the migration path was ultra easy for me.
-
alem
sounds interesting, i was a die hard sway fan some time ago, now i just use kde for ease of use
-
armin
alem: Works just fine with 2 large 32" 4k displays attached to it, it's just my living room computer at this point, and FreeBSD works so blatantly well on it that I can't see myself putting something different on it. Now I just need realtime audio and being able to develop custom VST plugins on FreeBSD, that's quite a bit adventurous though.
-
alem
good luck!
-
alem
i never tried freebsd on desktop myself
-
armin
alem: But aside from THAT I can't find anything anymore I would miss. That's honestly the last missing puzzle piece.
-
armin
Oh it works so blatantly well these days that it's difficult to not recommend to try it. ;-)
-
alem
im running void linux on basically all my non server devices
-
alem
maybe i should try it on my laptop yeah
-
armin
I've been running Void for many years on both servers and desktops. It's nice.
-
alem
i've heard bad things about wifi drivers tho
-
armin
Oh it got better a couple of weeks ago, even my crap Thinkpad now has fast wifi5.
-
armin
And goddamn do I hate that Thinkpad with a passion, probably the WORST laptop I ever bought.
-
alem
lmao i tought thinkpads were great for foss
-
alem
was i wrong?
-
armin
I bought it used, and it turned out it was a french one but with re-painted keycaps!
-
armin
So the paint is falling apart now and basically now I got a keyboard that is impossible to use if you're not touch-typing. ;-)
-
armin
Thinkpads are excellent for FOSS; yes, but you absolutely should not get a t490s (that's the one I got, damn that was a mistake).
-
alem
lovely
-
armin
the BIOS post time (from switching on the computer to FreeBSD actually showing the beastie logo boot loader) is just way too long for me. :(
-
armin
The behaviour of FreeBSD is basically fine, it's just that when you load the DRM kernel module for amdgpu the TTY font becomes super tiny, but there are ways to work around that, I just set some bigger custom console font and it's fine. :)
-
armin
WiFi is a bit "weird", yeah, there are some "hacks" that implement something like you know from Linux, the graphical "connect me to that wifi, now" things, but it's far from being at that stage. If you can live with having to configure your WiFi manually (and your wifi card is supported) it's absolutely no issue, though.
-
armin
I mean I've been running FreeBSD on desktops 20 years ago already, it was somewhat "working" back then, too. But honestly what we have today is like *SO* much better.
-
armin
I can just hope that more people jump on the FreeBSD desktop waggon at this point, it's honestly mind-blowing to me how far we are with this now.
-
drathir_tor
alem: go ahead for testing... probaly main change would be lower resource usage and such habit of search linux tools (even if most common things will works here as well)
