This is fucking killing me. The *ONE* thing I want to do with the Asrock BMC is open the remove console and I can't do it with *any* of the browsers on my mac
-
» dnp1 wonders what that has to do with #freebsd
-
crb
Noting, sorry I vented. I want to upgrade to 15.1 from 15 but it's hard to do if I can't see the console
-
fengshaun
I'm catching up on upgrades. So far I'm on 13.5. Can I go to 14.4 or is it safer to continue with 14.0 and make my way up to 14.4 with minor upgrades?
-
crb_
wish the freebsd install would display the *VERSION* of freebsd it's installing
-
skered
fengshaun: I always go by the rule if it was out when your version existed you can upgrade to it.
-
skered
-
fengshaun
skered, that's a good rule, thanks!
-
skered
You just want to make sure 13.5 is the latest patch release.
-
skered
That's the first part of the docs.
-
fengshaun
Yea, it seems to be
-
angry_vincent
when doing make packages in /usr/src is src.conf respected? ( i disable what I do not need) or it builds whole base into pkgbase?
-
angry_vincent
i meant does it build whole enchilada of packages or selected ones

what's the standard json tool jq or jql? they have really similar names and desriptions
-
skered
I know of jq but not jql.
-
skered
What the descript of jql?
-
rcf
jq is the standard.
-
skered
Jira Query Language says my rough google search. Which would be something very different than jq.
-
nimaje
I don't think any standard even mentions jq, much less requires
-
Gedge
I would say that `jq` is the de facto standard

Is there anything an end-user can do about ports that have a maintainer but are not usually quite up-to-date?
-
skered
spork_css_: Create a bug.

spork_css_
Found my password manager clients were all having issues, then saw the issue was the server side was out of date and while all the linux distros were caught up...
-
skered
If you can include a patch that would be better.
-
spork_css_
Yeah, I get it, that's how it normally goes.
-
spork_css_
Was thinking there must be a way to break the cycle. Maybe someone that uses the software regularly would be a better choice for maintainer?
-
spork_css_
-
wavefunction
spork_css_: People rely on maintainers to also be knowlegeable about the software itself, and so prevent "bad" updates. It's an unnecessarily complex problem.
-
spork_css_
there's generally already some lag from Bitwarden doing a new release to Vaultwarden (server-side) getting an update to keep them in-sync, so then when the port sits there for another week, you might be looking at 3-4 weeks of having to either just not use anything but the web vault, building locally (there's generally no "patching"), or rolling back your Bitwarden client (which, depending on platform, can be tough).
-
spork_css_
This feels like a problem a mentor program could fix.
-
spork_css_
Like I have stuff I use, I could certainly do this, and probably enjoy it, but the number of times in my 30+ year career where I've had to spend more than 10 minutes with "make" is... countable on my fingers.

do tailscale funnel work on freebsd? I can't seem to get it working and tbh have no idea how to debug this
-
rtprio
alem: it's in ports, is funnel a different thing?
-
alem
rtprio: it's not, it's bundled with the tailscale package
-
spork_css_
wavefunction: fwiw, I have emailed this maintainer a few times offering to help.

On the upside, my old clunker workstation made it to 14.4 - and X even continues working, and the nvidia driver still seems to support an ancient card:

woohoo!
-
spork_css_
dare I attempt 15.x?
-
rdr
it's pretty easy but migrating from earlier versions can be tricky unless you have guidance or know
-
spork_css_
I've hit a number of systems with it so far, but they are all very boring. This thing runs X, but is ultimately not important, so I might YOLO.
-
spork_css_
my only "concern" is the nvidia driver.
-
ek
15.x is totally good to go.
-
ek
X or no.
-
spork_css_
ek: I barely used the thing after moving down here, and in its prior life it was basically just "I need something with a web browser in the garage".
-
spork_css_
but to show how long it's been since I spent time in desktop unix of any sort, I was shocked that this thing had 1000+ pkgs.
-
spork_css_
and I'm just using xfce!
-
» spork_css_ just had flashback to FVWM
-
ek
spork_css_: I totally believe it. A lot of packages go into X.
-
spork_css_
also was looking at how to remove geli encryption on this thing (much like the OP in this, I put it on just to see how it works w/zfs on root)

I have a second identical drive in this thing, so I'm good, just have to boot onto that one to see what's there and if anything needs to be kept... I think it might have GhostBSD...
-
spork_css_
Anyhow, time to put the JetKVM on it so I don't have to keep getting up and going to the other side of the house to enter a passphrase (highly recommend those goofy things).
