freebsd has a new website o>o
-
sig`
new website looks nice
-
rwp
I think the new web site is not as obvious where to find things as compared to the previous one.
-
rwp
For example right on the front page is this large very visible 2x3 grid of 6 such as documentation and such but none of them are links to get to the documentation. Those should be links.
-
sig`
maybe working quirks out still?
-
heston76
The banner at the top, seems to cover that.
-
sig`
rwp: what do you mean under Documentation nothing takes you to documentation links?
-
sig`
you highlight your mouse over Documentation you get links to 7 different documentation links.
-
satanist
problem with mouse over it only works with a mouse
-
sig`
well tab works for me
-
rwp
The navigation bar on the top does work for me. It's just tedious to navigate without an actual mouse. That's annoying. It is less accessible for me.
-
sig`
well use a mouse
-
sig`
:)
-
satanist
tab doesn't work for me and my browser plugin for better keyboard support also can't open the menues
-
MelanieUrsidino
sig`! no!
-
MelanieUrsidino
that is NOT the answer
-
MelanieUrsidino
"tab works for me" - explain your configuration
-
sig`
well if you're focues in the browser you can tab through stuff but that isn't the anser either...
-
sig`
I don't use mouseless wm's
-
satanist
I can tab throgh stuff but not open the menu for the documentation links, this only open on mouse over
-
sig`
they need aria-expanded
-
sig`
but aria-expanded doesn't do it alone either. needs some js or css to actually show or hide the dropdowwn
-
amencoda
Mice are neat
-
amencoda
I actually have two mapped out on my box, because I'm ambidextrous and use on on-screen accessiblity keypad to type... Works the tits
-
rtprio
works the tits is not an expression i've heard before
-
rtprio
in this context
-
sig`
lol
-
MelanieUrsidino
what the-...
-
rtprio
"it's the tits", yes
-
amencoda
I was testing to see if someone picked that up, you got it
-
amencoda
anyways, back to my accessibility 2 mouse typing rant... 50wpm, not bad eh?
-
MelanieUrsidino
doug engelbart would be terrified, but if it works for you...
-
o0x1eef
Very Irish phrase
-
MelanieUrsidino
o0x1eef, he's US american, and I'm English
-
o0x1eef
We do weird things to english in the islands immediately outside England :)
-
MelanieUrsidino
Pardon?
-
MelanieUrsidino
I misrèad that as «we do weird things to THE english in the islands immediately outside Englad»
-
o0x1eef
lol
-
nimaje
hm, that new website also misses the supported releases directly on the front page, also no idea where I would navigate to for a page with that information, but I would argue that I shouldn't need that, it should be on the front page
-
mage
hello, out of curiousity: what do you use nowadays to monitor FreeBSD servers/jails/..? I'm still using Icinga2 but I'm wondering about alternatives
-
SKull
mage: there are plenty of alternatives. but none of them are trivial to properly setup. so you'd really need a reason to actually pick one of em.
-
ketas
did nimaje get it workinf
-
ketas
g
-
nimaje
ketas: do you mean wireguard via ifconfig_<interface> in rc.conf and /etc/start_if.<interface> ? yes, using daemon to make wg setconf non-blocking and not typoing the interface name and everything works fine
-
polarian
I urgently need audio working on my laptop again
-
polarian
but it just wont work
-
o0x1eef
at least youre not deaf
-
polarian
like I am clueless on what to do
-
polarian
the snd drivers ar eloaded
-
polarian
I have pcm devices
-
polarian
but none of them work
-
polarian
beep(1) does nothing
-
polarian
theres no errors, theres no explanation for any of it
-
polarian
and I have just left it like this for a year
-
ketas
i bet you beep beep beep irl now
-
ketas
:)
-
o0x1eef
maybe youre deaf after all
-
polarian
ketas: my laptop might make a crash sound soon :3
-
ketas
lol
-
nxjoseph
i regret smashing my laptop, so dont :D
-
ketas
did it felt nice
-
nxjoseph
later, nah
-
o0x1eef

-
polarian
lol
-
ketas

-
nxjoseph
it did not run a game well
-
o0x1eef

-
ketas

-
ketas
polarianq
-
ketas
polarian:
-
ketas

-
nxjoseph
yeah maybe even muted with mixer?
-
ketas

-
ketas
mixer 100% & cat urandom
-
o0x1eef
alsamixer and press m, oh the memories
-
polarian
ketas: nope none of them work ;)
-
ketas
eh
-
ketas
then it's a bug?
-
nxjoseph
:(
-
polarian
dunno
-
polarian
it used to work
-
polarian
then I reinstalled with FDE
-
polarian
and it stopped working
-
ketas
wait
-
polarian
and I never could be arsed to look into it
-
ketas
fde
-
polarian
yes
-
nxjoseph
full disk encryption?
-
o0x1eef
why is it a sudden need after a year with no sound
-
polarian
to present something on a meeting
-
polarian
I dont usually present
-
polarian
and for meetings I usually use a linux laptop
-
polarian
because my laptop is neutered, no webcam
-
o0x1eef
yup, same here
-
polarian
but this will be anonymous and I need access to my dev environment
-
polarian
so it must be on my freebsd laptop
-
ketas
why did you castrate it visually
-
polarian
wait I should flip over the laptop and make sure the speakers are plugged in for sure
-
polarian
I checked it once ages ago
-
o0x1eef
everyone who installs freebsd does this
-
polarian
I should check it again
-
o0x1eef
its a feature to not have a working webcam
-
polarian
^^^
-
polarian
exactly
-
polarian
but companies are pissy about not showing your ugly face on meetings
-
polarian
idk why
-
ketas
they are uvc now tho
-
o0x1eef
bad companies
-
ketas
?
-
polarian
if I wanted to have a camera pointing at me
-
polarian
I would plug one in when needed
-
polarian
do I want the camera stairing at me 24/7? nah
-
ketas
wait
-
o0x1eef
all spies disable their web cam also
-
o0x1eef
are you a spy
-
ketas
sound worked
-
ketas
in fbsd?
-
ketas
in that laptop
-
ketas
if it did, how come it stopped
-
polarian
*sigh*
-
o0x1eef
FDE
-
o0x1eef
Spy technology broke it
-
f451
webcams for meetings just sucks. No value is created
-
o0x1eef
I agree. Totally.
-
o0x1eef
It's an extrovert optimization
-
f451
all of the hassle of remote working with none of the benefits
-
hodapp
so, webcams at work did produce one important benefit here: it helped us filter out the employee who turned out to be the "be butt-naked during the morning meeting, and have video on, and not realize his laptop was pointed directly at his crotch" sort
-
o0x1eef
Certain companies work certain ways, and you just have to find the right one, or even better, create your own and make the rules
-
hodapp
because anyone who manages to step on that many rakes at once probably shouldn't be trusted with other responsibility
-
o0x1eef
No I don't agree. It proves nothing.
-
f451
i'm also a bit deaf with some sounds, hypersensitive to others. someone mumbling or making the wrong frequencies in the chat and i cant hear them
-
hodapp
also, he wasn't *required* to have video on, he just had it on anyway
-
f451
an exhibitionist
-
hodapp
an unemployed exhibitionist
-
f451
but - if he was wfh and got the job done and on time, does it matter whether he was butt naked or not?
-
f451
ofc it'd be a tad different if he turned up at the office buut naked
-
f451
lol!
-
hodapp
yes, if he showed up at the office only a couple people would have seen him naked
-
hodapp
instead of the *entire company*
-
o0x1eef
just the wrong company, if they were making adult movies he'd be a winner
-
hodapp
he wasn't really suited for that either
-
hodapp
...nevermind, said too much
-
o0x1eef
>_>
-
f451
sounds like something out of risks digest (is that still going)
-
hodapp
dunno what that is
-
f451
oh - in the 90s it was a mailing list of computer risks
-
o0x1eef
hahaha
-
o0x1eef
the worst risk of all no one knew about then...... social media.
-
f451
might be software, hardware, disasters happening when they interface with society, that kind of hting
-
o0x1eef
PEBKAC KEBAB
-
f451
-
f451
since 1985 !!!
-
o0x1eef
That sounds awesome
-
o0x1eef
I imagined a crappy magazine
-
o0x1eef
Because 90s
-
amencoda
There's an old cigar shop in my town that still sells 2600 magazine
-
f451
90s was great. before capitalism ruined it all
-
amencoda
It's nice to see they're still printing away
-
f451
i was just thinking of alt.2600
-
o0x1eef
2000 was alright too. 2001 was the game changer and set the tone for the rest of the decade.
-
hodapp
the '90s didn't really end until 9/11
-
hodapp
you all know in your heart that I'm right
-
o0x1eef
I agree with that.
-
f451
amencoda: a cigar shop is as rare as hen's teeth
-
o0x1eef
i guess it depends on the country, in spain theyre not unusual.
-
f451
i am having a hard time getting a dvd writer to be seen as a writer through an ubuntu bhyve guest
-
amencoda
Cigar shops all over, but this one still sells magazines... Even has the bulk peanuts and like old fashioned shaving soaps and safety razors
-
f451
oh wow. whats the shop?
-
amencoda
It's basically a 100 year old relic, the one guy that works there has been at the store 60 years, he started working there at 16 or so... Then the owner handed it over to him... So you're still looking at wooden floors, stand up humidors, etc
-
f451
sounds awesome
-
amencoda
He works every day and despite no smoking laws in the country, he still lights up in the back because you can smell it when he's not at the front counter
-
f451
:D
-
amencoda
Even has his own Pipe Tobacco blend which is really nice
-
amencoda
It's flavoured, Plum, Vanilla and Chocolate I think he said... Had it, was good
-
o0x1eef
A dad's friend got throat cancer from smoking and has 6 months to live, so tobacco is not romantic.
-
amencoda
We're all going to die, it's learning how to live for a living - that's the trick
-
ketas
this is #smoking, obviously
-
o0x1eef
trying to avoid dying in agony
-
amencoda
Yeah, sorry, thought I was in the social tab
-
ketas
:p
-
ketas
who even looks into social channel
-
amencoda
Me but all the social chat is in here usually
-
ketas
lol yeah
-
o0x1eef
There's less freebsd users in social
-
ketas
i read freebsd users are less social
-
o0x1eef
we're so cool non-freebsd users come just to hang out with us
-
ketas
:)
-
amencoda
payday, going to be eating good today
-
amencoda
Going to need a burger to make it through setting up an old desktop as a server...
-
amencoda
already worked on a rough drafter for firewall ruleset
-
amencoda
going to turn into into a webserver, basically
-
amencoda
Powered by the devil
-
ketas
so
-
ketas
i'm adding ports again after 20 years
-
o0x1eef
adding ports?
-
ketas
yes
-
ketas
i still maintain 2, tho someone has upgraded them, 1 got deleted
-
ketas
-
ketas
test that :)
-
ketas
it's cheap usb uart ic you can flash serials into for id
-
ketas
had a local need...
-
CrtxReavr
Q: How many Bell Labs Vice Presidents does it take to change a light bulb?
-
CrtxReavr
A: That's proprietary information. Answer available from AT&T on payment
-
CrtxReavr
of license fee (binary only).
-
ketas
CrtxReavr: lol
-
ketas
thank god for public domain lightbulbers
-
o0x1eef
Hahahaha
-
o0x1eef
Yeah, but at the same time, they know how to make money from software
-
anth
CrtxReavr: your joke is out of date. Payment due to Nokia now. :-/
-
CrtxReavr
anth, fortune -m "binary only"

sharmeanix
does anyone know if pkg mirrors will be allowed in the future? any news on this? or is there any out there that I'm unaware of?
-
sharmeanix
I'm afraid with pkgbase even mirrors of the base system would be halted
-
sharmeanix
For context, I need to use mirrors a lot. like, I didn't have access to the internet for the last 87 days (a total blackout in the country) but locally available linux mirrors and even NetBSD/OpenBSD existed
-
sharmeanix
just none for FreeBSD
-
solstis
dear all, after trying to install a winboze program (via .exe installation wizard) i receive the following message:wine: could not load ntdll.so: Shared object "libprocstat.so.1" not found, required by "ntdll.so"
-
solstis
is there by any change a quick and nifty fix for this.. ;-D
-
solstis
*by any chance
-
sharmeanix
Ah did I miss an answer? I was on an unstable connection
-
sharmeanix
Also isn't HTTP_TIMEOUT env supposed to control pkg's fetch timeout? well it doesn't as far as I tried
-
rwp
sharmeanix, No answers in between. But there is no reason you cannot create your own mirror. The source for all is readily available.
-
rwp
If I were going to be stuck in a cave for an extended time I would endeavor to have a full copy of all of the source code to everything such that I could rebuild everything from source. That way the cave would be completely selfcontained.
-
rwp
I would start with the base system. It's a cohesive bit by itself. Then move to having a copy of all of the ports that are important. Some ports will likely be too large to take on casually and are also probably not highly used and could be left out.
-
wavefunction
Someone wrote about setting up a pkg mirror
area536.com/posts/freebsd-pkg-host
-
rwp
sharmeanix is not in the channel at the moment.
-
wavefunction
Part of me wants to give sharmeanix an account on my hosted soju :-D
-
rtprio
does anyone have a .. 'more fancy' unbound setup? prometheus? dns blackholing/adblock/etc
-
rtprio
i'm trying to replace a pihole
