is there a way to change the label of an existing FAT32 partition? I did not think to specify -L when I was creating this partition, and I'd rather not have to reformat it

google's AI overview suggests that newfs_msdosfs -L on an existing partition is non-destructive, but I have strong suspicions that it's hallucinating

since this is an MBR partition scheme, am I understanding correctly that gpart modify -l is not going to work? it sounds like while GPT has partition labels, MBR doesn't, and the label is stored in the filesystem itself, so changing it is done differently depending on FS

ah, so dosfstools is the package I was using over on Linux. the only package in ports uses the Linuxulator with CentOS 7, but looking at the dosfstools source code, I am seeing some FreeBSD-specific stuff, so I'll try to build it here

hm, why shouldn't gpart work on MBR partition schemes? it is listed as supported scheme in the man page

so dosfstools does build, but fatlabel doesn't seem to work properly. maybe I just need to pull out a Linux machine

nimaje: it's not that gpart doesn't work with MBR, it's that MBR apparently doesn't have partition labels

labels were done at the FS level and not the partition level

and yeah, tested on an SD card with nothing important on it, and newfs_msdos does the expected, the AI was hallucinating

I guess technically it's not deleting the actual data on the card but it's overwriting the FAT rendering it practically inaccessible

seems I either run fatlabel from Linux, or reformat this iPod so that I can set the label. I just don't really want to have to go through and reconfigure settings, and copy all of my music back over, for something relatively trivial like the name that gets displayed on the about screen

The main reason for libraries not found are lack of upgrading after a major release. upgrading with --force should upgrade every installed package and solve the problem. pkg upgrade -f -y

also. the intent of the law is to eventually get something to tell someone something. which i guess is the big issue. that's easy to pull off on the conglomerate sloperating systems but a bit more difficult with the open ones.
