Could someone please validate my understanding on this. On a default install different boot environments can have different kernels, right? They are just files under the /boot folder on the root file-system?
-
|cos|
(I'm asking since the bootloader no longer seems to find a kernel which to me is obviously still there.)
-
mzar
|cos|: boot environments is more than kernel, but yes, different boot environments can have different kernels
-
mzar
consider boot environment as complete OS
-

has anyone run ircd in a jail system before?
-
luke_jobless_sb
if so, what have you done? ssl at the nginx proxy jail or ssl on the ircd jail?
-
|cos|
mzar: Thanks. It might be a usability issue in the bootloader, with it pointing to the no longer valid kernel of the previously selected BE. Circling through all the kernels back to the one presented by an identical string results in a working boot.
-
mzar
|cos|: so it worked? same here, booting non-default kernel from non-standard BE should be supported
-
|cos|
mzar: It works. Confusing though, and I guess extra confusing when freebsd-version spits out an error about missing kernel (which I believe only meants non-existent /boot/kernel).

radhitya
good afternoon. \o/

voy4g3r2
hello everyone, i have recently tried to update /usr/ports/jellyfin package and i am receiving an unsupported version for this package. Would anyone else be able to confirm that it is an issue with the port vs my machine? i have done a git pull and i am on 14.1-p5 release.. but yet still get this error
-
voy4g3r2
which could be confirmd with a simple make install clean.. this is happening on multiple machines..
-
nerozero
Hi there, after updating to 14.1 I never managed to set proper shell settings to a root user
-
nerozero
eg ~/.profile not ~/.shrc never loaded ...
-
mzar
nerozero: it's a bug, please search for relevant PR
-
nerozero
mzar, tnx
-
mzar
nerozero: you can change default shell to {t,}csh and everything will be fine
-
nerozero
ya, but i dont like csh
-
nerozero
. ~/.shrc works fine
-
nerozero
will wait till be patched
-
» mzar is addicted to tcsh
-
nerozero
thank you for reply
-
» nerozero fish
-
» Tenkawa still prefers bash (yeah yeah I know I'm odd... but noone likes ksh anymore)
-
nerozero
pure sh is awesome !
-
mzar
it's good for scripting
-
mzar
nerozero: I could mislead you
-
nerozero
:)
-
mzar
nerozero: only "set -o vi" is ignored in .shrc
-
nerozero
yeh
-
mzar
but I can't find PR
-
mzar
so maybe it wasn't reported yet
-
nerozero
Then I will make a new thread on freebsd forum and post the link here afterwards, but will do that tomorrow, i need to update some more servers ... :)
-
nerozero
thank you so much!
-
nerozero
FreeBSD community is awesome !
-
dandyn
there's so many json packages :D
-
dandyn
which one to pick?
-
dandyn
for json support ?
-
Tenkawa
I'm impressed how well the RPI support is working on 15... I'm testing on a 4 atm... about to try out one of my 5's
-
|cos|
dandyn: what do you mean when you say "json support"?
-
dandyn
I solved that, it needed tcllib
-
dandyn
but, shouldn't one be able to use .tclsh from shell if one have tcl90-9.0.0 (Tool Command Language) package added ?
-
dandyn
|cos| help me out :)
-
|cos|
dandyn: I have no idea.
-
gewt
the installer doesn't time out or anything if the verification pass for distribution sets takes awhile, right?
-
gewt
installing via a 40mbit up link's not gonna be fasyt. :P
-
ivy
i'm confused, i built a new 15.0 pkgbase image, and built a new set of packages with poudriere, but i still get this
-
ivy
[12!] amaranth ~# pkg
-
ivy
ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libmd.so.6" not found, required by "pkg"
-
ivy
even weirder:
-
ivy
[1? 20!] amaranth ~# ldd /usr/local/sbin/pkg|grep libmd
-
ivy
libmd.so.6 => not found (0)
-
ivy
libmd.so.7 => /lib/libmd.so.7 (0x2a7d599fb000)
-
ivy
ah wait, i think this is the poudriere bug where it doesn't correctly recreate the @clean shapshot after updating the jail, so the upgrade doesn't effect
-
Tenkawa
Well now my PI5 is up and running nicely on 15 current...
-
ivy
Tenkawa: is PI5 in this context = Raspberry Pi 5? i thought that didn't support freebsd
-
Tenkawa
Yeah...
-
Tenkawa
works fine
-
Tenkawa
It doesn't support all the hw yet..
-
ivy
what doesn't work? if it does NVMe, Ethernet perhaps i will buy one to desk
-
ivy
er, test
-
Tenkawa
but enough to do what I need to start porting
-
ZedHedTed
are you logged into IRC from the pi5?
-
Tenkawa
ZedHedTed: no this is my mbp... I'm running a buildworld on it atm
-
ivy
although i really came to hate the rpi4 so i don't know i want that to be my upgrade path
-
Tenkawa
ivy: in theory yes with the nvme however I do warn you if you haven't seen the pi5 nvme options yet they aren't for everyone anyway
-
ZedHedTed
Tenkawa: does freebsd recognize the ethernet port on the pi5?
-
Tenkawa
ZedHedTed: no
-
Tenkawa
I use usb ones
-
Tenkawa
I am going to debug that first probably
-
ZedHedTed
i just looked up the specs. apparently the pi5 has wifi on it too.
-
Tenkawa
I am just looking for something to mess around with... since newer RISC-V support is way out there still
-
ZedHedTed
Tenkawa: is wifi also not working? i'd be surprised if it actually is
-
Tenkawa
No... Broadcom is going to be a problem...
-
Tenkawa
(with wifi on almost everything)
-
Tenkawa
I still run into brcm driver issues in Linux even now
-
Tenkawa
I'll be happy if I can get one of my usb wifi dongles working though
-
Tenkawa
I have a 3 port USB3 switch hooked up
-
ZedHedTed
same here, on the dongle part. when running freebsd on my recent dell inspiron 15, everything works except the wifi & the touch screen.
-
ZedHedTed
the internal wireless card isn't recognized, and even the USB wifi dongle i bought after checking the list of compatible devices isn't recognized.
-
ZedHedTed
once i'm well again, i'm gonna look through the the relevant parts of the handbook again.
-
Tenkawa
Yeah I was impressed enough that all I needed was the efi loader and 15 image and it loaded right up
-
Tenkawa
I will work on trying to put one of my nvme drives in the mix in the next few days (all 4 of my pi5's use them)
-
ZedHedTed
gl
-
Tenkawa
Thanks... fortunately this is what I work on all day so I have lots of time to commit on it..
-
ZedHedTed
Tenkawa: is it a paid job for you? i'm kinda jealous if it is...
-
Tenkawa
No... I'm retired.. its a hobby
-
Tenkawa
It was my job for most of my career though
-
Tenkawa
I focused on Linux kernel and Telecom software development.
-
ZedHedTed
nice
-
ZedHedTed
i'm 28 and work full time in school IT, so getting all the components working on freebsd or ghostbsd is gonna be a weekend project
-
Tenkawa
Fun project though... I have a ton of SBC's around here... that's what I focus on now..
-
ivy
fricking poudriere, now what is going on?
