Howdy, folks!
-
nicholaus04
Managed to move my main devuan PC to use FreeBSD.
-
rwp
I eould congratulate nicholaus for taking the first step into a larger world but they already parted.
-
al1r4d
and i use both, nicholaus

Anyone know why D35694 (Add ts(1) commend) was never merged?

Howdy, folks!

I just realized today that most X11 displays get housed on the first unoccupied TTY it can find, as opposed to linux where it uses the current TTY that X was started on.
-
nicholaus04
And the highest TTY i can use is TTY8, so the first X.Org display created is on TTY9.
-
kevans
yup- is this a problem?
-
nicholaus04
Not really.
-
nicholaus04
Though, i'm more use to X.Org starting it's display on the same TTY it was started from, but this also works for me too.
-
topcat001
It used to be that way on Linux not too long ago
-
nicholaus04
Huh, go figure.
-
topcat001
Now it reuses the tty startx was run from
-
kevans
ah, ok- sometimes it's hard to tell if some dialog is setup for a problem that needs solved or just a tale of surprise; glad to hear it's the latter rather than the former
-
kevans
:-)
-
topcat001
y not really a problem :)

Is FreeBSD 14 not supported on a Raspberry Pi Zero W? (There is no 14 release image for it as per the links on this page:
wiki.freebsd.org/arm/Raspberry%20Pi#Pre-Built_Images)
-
jbo
kevans
-
kevans
jh
-
kevans
jbo
-
jbo
so...
-
jbo
how are things going? :D
-
kevans
oh y'know
-
jbo
arm-none-eabi-gcc? **cough**
-
jbo
still creeping my style :<
-
jbo
still running bhyve VMs :(
-
kevans
the machine I was using to work on libstdc++ is being used for something actually work-related for a while, so no progress there
-
» kevans doesn't have anything beefy enough that can run gcc builds as much as he needs to work on it
-
jbo
:<
-
jbo
why do you hate me?
-
kevans
I mean...you could work it out, too =D you probably know more about libstdc++ than I do
-
jbo
doubtful
-
kevans
i mean, you've at least used it
-
jbo
every. single. day.
-
kevans
i've not a single motivating use case and I've never looked at the build in my life
-
jbo
you understand that after only having spend 15 years of actually doing stuff most people like you seem like gods to me, right?
-
lw
jbo: how do i take a photograph of the matrix code of a CD using an iPhone?
-
jbo
lw, no idea. I never touched the stuff.
-
jbo
lw, on android I just use some random app using zxing under the hood
-
jbo
-
lw
you never did it but you use zxing to do it? :)
-
jbo
lw, not on an iPhone
-
lw
oh
-
lw
no i don't want to scan the content of the barcode
-
jbo
imagine me actually reading your question carefully... :D
-
lw
i literally just want a photograph of it
-
jbo
camera app?!
-
lw
it's too reflective, it won't photograph properly
-
lw
i think i need a flatbed scanner :(
-
jbo
wtf?
-
kevans
15 years is like, just a hair under half my life
-
jbo
kevans, don't remind me... I'm officially old nowdays .__.
-
kevans
=D
-
jbo
imagine humans not requiring 15 years to become "usable"
-
jbo
lw, so you have a compact disc, and there's a matrix code on it?
-
jbo
lw, surely, that matrix code is not on the "reflective" side of the disc but rather on the "label" side of the disc?
-
lw
jbo: as there is on every CD, yes
-
kevans
i'm scared to see how functional my kids will be in 10, 12, 14 years. not even out of their teens yet
-
lw
jbo: no, the matrix is printed on the 'reverse' side (the pressed side)
-
jbo
lw, are you sure that you're talking about matrix codes?
-
lw
-
jbo
kevans, I remember you talking about enjoying "new born smell" when I bothered you about arm-none-eabi-gcc initially. still thinking of that regularly :D
-
jbo
lw, different matrix code -__-
-
lw
different to what?!
-
kevans
yeah, he's nearly 5 months old now, so that's how that project is going =-)
-
jbo
-
lw
ooh
-
jbo
kevans, congratulations :)
-
lw
no not one of those, but now i see where the confusion came from
-
jbo
lw, <3
-
jbo
lw, kissy?
-
» kevans was trying to figure out the difference between that and a qr code, but guesses it's that the qr code is a special case with orienting features
-
lw
yeah a (CD) matrix code is nothing to do with a 2D bar code, i didn't even know they were called matrix codes
-
lw
it's just the text printed on the inside of a pressed CD
-
jbo
kevans, QR is a type of 2D core, and so is the matrix code.
-
» jbo actually implemented parsers for this type of thing
-
jbo
hence the confusion with lw
-
jbo
lw, so... XY-problem... what are you trying to achieve here?
-
lw
jw: i want to take a photograph of the matrix and then upload it to musicbrainz
-
lw
music nerds care about having a photo of the matrix because it lets you identify different pressings of the same release
-
antranigv
god I hate Matrix Code
-
lw
omg stop sending me messages on signal while i'm talking to you here
-
lw
how many communications channels do we need
-
jbo
lw, why tf are you not just using audio/cyanrip?
-
lw
i don't want to rip the CD
-
jbo
it creates a disc ID for you
-
antranigv
I understand 2D bar code, and I understand QR, but matrix codes are hell
-
lw
i already have the disc ID, that's not the same thing
-
lw
the disc ID is just a hash of the CDDA TOC
-
jbo
antranigv, I disagree - but that is fine.
-
kevans
what's the difference between specialized software and camera to take a picture of it? some masking of the reflective surface?
-
jbo
lw, so you're literally asking me how to take a photograph?
-
lw
....
-
antranigv
jbo please please please, help me understand like I'm 5 :D I think I never had a proper guide for matrix code.
-
» kevans thinks we just asked the same question
-
lw
jbo: stop sending messages and wait, i will send you an example of the problem
-
jbo
antranigv, the wikipedia article should provide a very good entry point.
-
jbo
lw, the one thing I can do reliably is waiting.... asking kevans :D
-
jbo
he still refuses to work on gcc stuff, but my patience knows no bounds.
-
antranigv
jbo I read that like 5 times in the last 2 years. never was able to get 100%. every time I try to guess what the outcome is gonna be, I get it wrong
-
scoobybejesus
this conversation is over my head
-
antranigv
while I can "write" a QR code using my brain!
-
lw
jbo:
i.imgur.com/SMUK9vZ.jpeg - look at how reflective it is and how the text is covered by a reflection of my hand
-
antranigv
draw, I guess, is the right term.
-
lw
i want a copy of what's printed on the CD without the reflections
-
antranigv
lw wait, you burnin or rippin ?
-
jbo
lw, ur doing it wrong
-
jbo
lw, but I wouldn't know how to do better. my business partner is a professional photographer but he's currently out enjoying life
-
kevans
need a camera mount and a box
-
jbo
lw, from what I know: don't use flash
-
jbo
lw, get proper high-volume light on that thing with some diffusers
-
antranigv
yeah, but also set the saturation to zero
-
antranigv
wait
-
antranigv
I can modify the uploaded image
-
jbo
but I honestly don't know what I'm talking about
-
antranigv
jbo what do you want the final outcome to be?
-
antranigv
or be *like*
-
jbo
antranigv, wrong destination...
-
kevans
I was picturing a professional photographer setup with a solid color backdrop in front of and behind the subject
-
jbo
the final outcome I want is for kevans to make arm-gcc-none-eabi usable :p
-
antranigv
ahahaahahaha
-
lw
antranigv: i appreciate the offer but i have like 30 CDs i need to photograph
-
lw
so i need to find the right way to do it myself :-)
-
kevans
really I'm hoping some other sucker wants libstdc++ and understands the gcc build
-
kevans
but my ability to build the thing over and over again or not is an impediment
-
antranigv
if I can figure out the magic foruma in my editor, you should be able to do it with a regular phone + GIMP/ImageDoctorStrange
-
kevans
I want to build a NAS that can double as a competent builder at some point, but that's not in the budget for a while yet
-
antranigv
kevans I can donate that
-
antranigv
how much storage we're speaking?
-
antranigv
can the "host" be AMD? or does it have to be ARM?
-
kevans
host can be whatever
-
jbo
kevans, I have a threadripper 7960x - but not the skills
-
lw
oh my god you're still talking about your new CPU
-
antranigv
kevans send me an SSH key over DM. I'll send you the access. OS on NVMe and a NAS? how much mem and CPU?
-
jbo
lw, sorry mate - I am truly not a source of wisedom for photography. do you hate me now AGAIN/
-
lw
no but i haven't read all that spam you sent me on signal yet, let's see
-
jbo
my spam is personally - so better keep it that way.
-
antranigv
This is why I text lw once a year, so he doesn't hate me
-
kevans
antranigv: ah, no worries; the other machine I typically use will become available again at some point
-
lw
jbo: ok so to your first point, you can't visit me without knowing my address, i will sell you a copy of my address for £1,600
-
jbo
antranigv, lw just hates everybody by default
-
kevans
it's hard to beat an 80-core monster with lots of RAM
-
antranigv
I was gonna suggest 96 core with 256GB of RAM, but ok
-
antranigv
oh sorry, 48 cores. damn I forgot about my OmniOS build machine
-
jbo
is it a flexing contest now?
-
antranigv
jbo if it was, then I lost
-
kevans
the 160 core mammoth is currently running linux
-
kevans
actually I could run a VM on that
-
SponiX
can I play?
-
antranigv
WHERE ARE MY CORES! oh of course Ubuntu needs 128 cores to do *checks notes* shitty scientific Python code
-
SponiX
Client: HexChat 2.16.2 • OS: Fedora release 41 (Rawhide) • CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2696 v4 @ 2.20GHz (2.80GHz) • Memory: 245.7 GiB Total (234.9 GiB Free) • Storage: 379.2 TB / 515.4 TB (136.3 TB Free) • VGA: NVIDIA Corporation AD104 [GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER] @ Intel Corporation Xeon E7 v4/Xeon E5 v4/Xeon E3 v4/Xeon D DMI2 • Uptime: 1h 30m 8s
-
lw
i have 8 cores and i write code like someone with 128 cores! <flex> (am i doing this right)
-
antranigv
lw javascript developer? is that you?
-
lw
antranigv: other way around, the JS developer needs 256 cores to write code as good as mine
-
antranigv
lw btw, the angle is clearly right in the image. but the lighting is the issue. there's a shadow from the top that's blocking it, if you want a clear 2D barcode image.
-
SponiX
did I win?
-
antranigv
SponiX not close enough :P
-
SponiX
Oh, I didn't even notice this was the FreeBSD channel. here I am with my Linux all showing
-
antranigv
SponiX but gotta say, that's impressive storage. please tell me it's ZFS!
-
antranigv
SponiX it's okay, we don't do distro wars. oh way, we don't even have distros
-
antranigv
s/way/wait
-
lw
antranigv: i'm not looking for just the barcode but the entire centre part of the disc including the other text ('CA ALM17224)
-
lw
which is printed on the same reflective surface that's obscured by my finger and my phone
-
jbo
lw, have you tried to angle?
-
jbo
AFAIK those things are not exactly visible by bare eye straight on either
-
lw
no but if my scanner plan doesn't work i might try that tomorrow... feels like it would need a fairly extremely angle though
-
kevans
have you considered using one of those flat bed scanners?
-
kevans
:-)
-
lw
kevin i literally just said
-
kevans
woah now, those are fighting words
-
antranigv
have you considered just... writing a note on the CD? assuming it's one sided?
-
lw
:-d
-
jbo
kevans, lw is.... agressive :p
-
lw
antranigv: i'd love to but musicbrainz seems to have no text field for this? i might submit that as a bug though
-
SponiX
antranigv: I have two arrays that are a btrfs raid1c3 and a raid10. No ZFS at all
-
antranigv
SponiX that makes me sad.
-
lw
this is much easier on discogs.com where everyone just enters the ifpi/matrix as text
-
kevans
the last person that called me kevin ended up in a hole. a financial one because they didn't have a very good personal fiscal policy, but still
-
jbo
lol'd
-
SponiX
antranigv: reason being that I buy used mismatched sized disks that btrfs still allows me to use in an array
-
antranigv
LOL
-
jbo
kevans, the giga move would be to name your child kevin
-
kevans
i tried, my wife wasn't a fan
-
kevans
she thought it'd be confusing for kevin to have an uncle kevin for some reason
-
antranigv
SponiX wait, you can do the same with ZFS o.O did I forget about this since I've been buying matched disks?
-
lw
jbo: Kevin Jr.
-
lw
or Kevan Jr.?
-
jbo
I don't know _ANY_ sane kevin. I know several kevins, and they are all.... well kevins.
-
SponiX
antranigv: my disk are not just mixed brands and such, they are all different sizes within the same arrays also
-
lw
jbo: i was about to say "what about Kevin Mitnick", then i realised i was confusing him with Kirk McKusick
-
antranigv
SponiX I have to try a similar setup with ZFS and truncate, just to be sure.
-
jbo
+1 for Mitnick
-
antranigv
Sad thing is, after he passed away, a family member calls me from the US and says "oh btw a very far family member passed away, have you heard of Kevin Mitnick? I think he also works with computers like you"
-
lw
jbo: fun fact, i used to know someone who was related to djb, and he got so annoyed that everyone he met said "oh you're related to djb, that arsehole?"
-
antranigv
I'm like "whaaaaaa, Kevin is family? how?" turns out his grandmother and my great grandfather were cousins or something.
-
» kevans cackles
-
kevans
antranigv: "His father was Alan Mitnick, his mother was Shelly Jaffe, and his maternal grandmother was Reba Vartanian" seems like a reasonable connection, yeah
-
SponiX
antranigv: if that is something that can be done with ZFS now, I haven't heard of the change
-
lw
SponiX: what, be cousins?
-
lw
am i getting conversations confused here
-
jbo
lw, who tf is djb?
-
SponiX
lw: I have been talking to antranigv. That is why I have his nick prefixed before my messages
-
lw
jbo: daniel bernsteib of djbdns, qmail, etc
-
lw
bernstein
-
SponiX
jbo: djb is a math teacher that programmed some software to prove it can be done securely
-
jbo
oh lol that guy
-
lw
SponiX: yeah it was antranigv who mentioned having a cousin though so my question is still reasonable
-
antranigv
did I miss a message? lol
-
antranigv
having a family tree that goes back to 1500s, yet I'm the only person using FreeBSD, makes me sad
-
antranigv
(well, except my mom and dad ofc)
-
antranigv
kevans btw, what about Chris? then he'll be Chris Evans, so totally ungoogle-able, if that's something you'd want.
-
lw
you'd think a particular name would be ungoogleable, but until recently you could call your child "Bisexual Jones" and they'd be ungoogleable... now look at where they'd be
-
kevans
hah
