TIL `freebsd-update IDS` doesn't check /usr/include/* files. anybody else surprised?

I have a vague feeling I've encountered this before

I think the issue might be trying to run `freebsd-update IDS` on a CURRENT box for a RELEASE dir

big deja-vu feels

it appears to be a bit more subtle than that

if an entire directory is missing, then freebsd-update IDS skips it

e.g. `mv /usr/include/machine /usr/include/oops`

but if its a single file, it does what you'd expect

Lol, freebsd-update IDS complains about my sshd_config file... I've changed it to disable password and PAM authentication.

One thing I like about FreeBSD is that the boot process is still simple enough to easily follow along

the boot process is really simple, no grub and stuff in sight. I like it a lot.

another TIL, minix 3.2.0+ has NetBSD userland. nice!

Yeah, it's difficult to swallow all that grub ;-)

But it doesn't end there.. it doesn't get simpler afterwards

I don't want to rant about grub etc.; I know too little to be able to judge if their complexity is justified. All I am saying is I feel more comfortable understanding FreeBSD's boot process than a modern GNU/Linux system's

It's pretty cool btw that grub can load and jump into both the freebsd loader and its kernel

I used that feature to boot into freeBSD from a linux rescue system

whether grub's complexity is justified or not, I've had it break literally dozens of times, so I suspect not

we do a pretty good job of not breaking loader
