Title: Deprecating smbfs(5) and removing it before FreeBSD 14
-
meena
Macer: there. that's where i read it
-
Macer
meena: ah ok. thanks.
-
Macer
guess i can look at fuse but i vaguely remember it being an awkward integration than just mounting it as you would with mount.cifs in linux
-
daemon
windows does have tools for mounting nfs which might be an option
-
daemon
guess it depends on precisely what you want to get working
-
Macer
i usually use smb across the board
-
daemon
yeah it is kinda handy that way
-
Macer
yah
-
Macer
especially for AD mounting auth etc etc
-
daemon
must admit what I do now days though is use a gentoo box as a central mountpoint for a few different things and share it out via samba (modern)
-
daemon
which also works with sshfs and nfs
-
Macer
ah so more like a proxy i guess?
-
daemon
pretty much
-
Macer
i tend to just connect to the fbsd fileserver (runnign samba) which is joined to an AD
-
daemon
I also do the same thing for https/vps have a central server that deals with it and connects how it can to all the rest of the crap
-
yuripv
guess it's time to port illumos smbfs client :D
-
Macer
so for me it's all smb heh... in linux, windows, macos
-
Macer
since it's one protocol to rule them all. but fbsd is the only one that doesn't have a mount.cifs or equivalent
-
Macer
and it seems like smb1 mount_smbfs is on its way out heh
-
yuripv
it actually does have mount.cifs, but that's the only version it supports
-
daemon
I mean you could just use bhyve to emulate <whatever> mount it via smbfs and then nfs or sshfs back share it to the parent
-
daemon
hacky but should work
-
Macer
yah that's far too ugly.. just had a 1u sitting in my rack doing nothing and wanted to see if i could go ahead and use it like i would proxmox except running fbsd+jails
-
Macer
unfortunately smb mounting is a bit of a dealbreaker although i'm sure there are fuse ways to do it maybe
-
Macer
fuse can be fickle sometimes though
-
daemon
maybe samba 4 comes with a replacement mount utility
-
Macer
naw. mounting is usually on the OS side
-
Macer
samba just serves it up
-
Macer
afaik unless that has changed
-
cracauer
Anybody here doing PXE boot and successfully switching the root filesystem to NFSv4?
-
cracauer
It is offering a lot of resistance.
-
sixpiece
how is freebsd doing?
-
BraveheartBSD
Fine. Why?
-
sixpiece
I have to write this report for school due in 12 hours, I chose FreeBSD to do it on, it's frustrating a bit lol
-
sixpiece
there's a section on problem and opportunity so I wrote the company is not doing well but has the greatest potential to roar back type thing
-
sixpiece
that's probably not accurate is it?
-
BraveheartBSD
No, lol. Have a look at the companies that use FreeBSD servers
-
sixpiece
I did it based on my interpretation of the financials
-
mason
sixpiece: Look at your logs from when you talked to koobs about this, and you should find most of what you want.
-

thanks

cool sponsors recently
-

I'm on the 2021 list for such a petty amount
-
sixpiece
from 2020 to 2021 I see a decrease in the overall balance sheet that is significant
-
sixpiece
5.02 million total current assets, net loss of 529k, from 5.7 million the rest of the years are normal I think
-
sixpiece
so it's just 1 bag year really
-
sixpiece
is competition an issue?
-
sixpiece
like what are the issues?

scaledagileframework.com does this safe framework look like the company in any way?

Any recommendation for a PCIe wireless network card that works nicely with FreeBSD 13 for wifi?
-
shiroyasha
A quick internet search is unsatisfactory, and looking substrings from
freebsd.org/releases/13.1R/hardware in the pcpartpicker website also doesn't return anything (I'm almost certainly searching the wrong way).

I am sorry, what's the context?
-
Helper
is it easy to remove OSX and installed BSD?
-
wildeboskat
From what?
-
Helper
from a macbook pro
-
wildeboskat
What kind?
-
wildeboskat
M1, Intel with or without T2 chip?
-
Helper
intel
-
wildeboskat
Ok at least you have a chance it might work then :)
-
wildeboskat
It depends very much on the exact model
-
Helper
I try installing it but it says the hard drive is in use
-
Helper
and cannot really format the harddrive.
-
wildeboskat
It could be that you have the Intel+T2 model, it doesn't allow you to write to the SSD if you boot in Linux or BSD
-
Helper
it says Processor 3.5 Ghz dual-Core Intel Core i
-
Helper
7
-
shiroyasha
parv, V_PauAmma_V : Thanks! I'll take a look at those links.
-
wildeboskat
Do you have the model number?
-
mictty
it should be a good challenge
-
wildeboskat
I see only one model mentioned in the wiki:
wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops/Apple_MacBook
-
VimDiesel
Title: Laptops/Apple_MacBook - FreeBSD Wiki
-
Helper
it says Macbook pro 13 Inch 2017 four thunderbolt 3 ports.
-
wildeboskat
Aha that helps a lot
-
wildeboskat
2017 should be pre-T2
-
wildeboskat
But I very much doubt it is well supported by FreeBSD
-
Helper
oh
-
parv
Thunderbolt is not yet supported
-
wildeboskat
Yes but the ports should work in USB mode
-
Helper
I can boot freebsd
-
Helper
from a USB
-
wildeboskat
It would be more stuff like wifi, bluetooth, brightness etc that will be issues I think
-
wildeboskat
I run FreeBSD on my primary desktop
-
wildeboskat
But it's an intel NUC, pretty standard hardware and I don't even use WiFi or bluetooth
-
Helper
Me two on my HP laptop.
-
idwer
shiroyasha: are you looking for wireless hw suggestions for a desktop board?
-
wildeboskat
Is your SSD showing up as /dev/nvd0?
-
wildeboskat
or /dev/nvme0?
-
wildeboskat
If not it might be trying to write to the USB it's booting from which won't be possible
-
idwer
ax210 might not fully work, outside intel boards
-
Helper
it boots from a USB device. The only thing I cannot do is remove the OS it self.
-
wildeboskat
Hm strange on the older MBP's I've definitely done that with Linux
-
Helper
so I can only have FreeBSD I can install Linux but I don't want that.
-
idwer
and you'll get a setback anyway, with the shim code that comes with ax2*0 support
-
wildeboskat
What device are you trying to write to?
-
idwer
shiroyasha: ask bz@ to port the openbsd if_iwx driver anyway
-
shiroyasha
idwer: Yea, something that lets me have wifi with FreeBSD 13.
-
shiroyasha
For now it seems my best option is choose cards one by one, search what chipset they have, and compare with the links mentioned before.
-
idwer
shiroyasha: this pcie adapter (not the wifi toy) would work, for physical hardware passthrough:
aliexpress.com/item/4000369715885.html
-
shiroyasha
parv mentioned similar, but those don't seem to be available in the website where I buy tech stuff from my country (I usually avoid Aliexpress, Amazon, etc, for tech stuff).
-
idwer
shiroyasha: ax2*0 basically is using linux code for the driver (and 802.11 subsystem)
-
shiroyasha
Worst case scenario 1, I go physically to a hardware store and ask specifically for this stuff.
-
idwer
sure - the upside is that aliexpress has a more or less endless stock of cheap hardware
-
shiroyasha
Worstest (?) case scenario 2, I use wired networking to a second router, and use that router to do the wifi stuff to the main router.
-
mictty
on a macbook, i tried linux via uefi like 2 years ago. A driver for the trackpad was supported but it was not as smooth as it used to be
-
mictty
keep in mind that when it comes to "support" it also has another problem within it
-
Helper
I see.
-
mkf
Hi. i'm trying to run civ on wine on frebsd. it works mostly, however the graphics performace is too poor.
-
mkf
my gpu is intel hd 600, my cpu is core i5-6500
-
mkf
s/600/530
-
VVD
maybe ur gpu is too weak?
-
mkf
wine reports often say it is faster than windows version. i was able to get it working on a 4000 HD, which is for ivy bridge.
-
mkf
(on windows.)
-
debdrup
I can't see why wine would be faster if you're being limited in terms of GPU.
-
sjk
I'm like to share some data between two jails. It's audio and video files that I'd like to have access to in a Plex jail and in a Nextcloud jail. How should I go about that? I don't want two copies of the same data.
-
sjk
Some zfs sorcery?
-
cracauer
NFS
-
debdrup
nullfs
-
sjk
cracauer: what would the performance implications be?
-
sjk
debdrup: would that get messy with uid/gids?
-
debdrup
sjk: you'll need some way of keeping uids/gids in sync
-
cracauer
I never tried NFS on localhost (effectively). I would expect some CPU overhead.
-
debdrup
NIS can be used, or you can just keep the uids/gids in sync manually if you're not mixing many jails with nullfs mounts like I do.
-
sjk
I believe I remember being able to mount nullfs and map uids and gids somehow? Will have to google a bit
-
sjk
I mean, nextcloud is just www user, and plex is just, err, plex, or something
-
debdrup
Yeah, it's not that hard :)

just create the user and pick the same uid on the other system; unless you lik making things extremely complex for no reason

when I configure FreeBSD upon install to randomize process id's, hide other user's processes, etc. Where do those settings get saved ?

I looked in /etc/rc.conf and /boot/loader.conf but didn't see them there

likely in sysctl.conf

Some of them need to be set on boot, so they belong in /boot/loader.conf - but I believe the rest go in /etc/sysctl.conf

Oh, a few also go in rc.conf :)
