openstandardsHi all, looking to run smartos as my hypervisor for my home lab perhaps some can give me a bit of guidence. Basically looking to use bhyve to create a vm and passing through my mellanox card this will handle the pppoe connection and routing. Is this do-able in theory?
-
nahamuopenstandards: I think so, but pci passthrough only works on Intel CPUs, so if you have an AMD CPU you wouldn't be able to do that.
-
bahamatYou don't need to pass through the physical nic to do a pppoe connection.
-
nahamubut I certainly was able to pass through a USB controller into a bhyve VM on my Intel machine and the Linux VM was able to use it just fine.
-
nahamubahamat makes a good point too though.
-
danmcdbahamat is correct.
-
bahamatIf you're doing something like "I need to do virtualized hardware testing", that's one thing. But if your goal is to just connect to your ISP and make the network *work*, then passing through a device is not the right thing to do.
-
openstandardsmy mellanox card is unsupported in smartos it's a connectx-3 so was looking to past it into a vm to get it supported that was the plan anyway
-
openstandardsthen use it within opnsense which has support for it
-
openstandardsI've got access to two rj45 on my mobo (link aggregation) connect that to my switcht then use the mellanox 10g which has two qsfp ports use one for a direct connection to my workstation and use the other with a sfp adapter and network module that gets connected to my hg612
-
openstandardsI've been using linux for many years now but tried smartos a while a go and love how easy it is to create a zone.
-
openstandardswhen i do prtdiag it lists my mellanox in use, that means i haven't black listed?
