setting 'innodb_buffer_pool_size_max=1048576m' in /etc/opt/ooce/mariadb-11.4/my.cnf solved the problem and I'm now successfully running MariaDB 11.4.12

Maybe some defaults changed with the latest MariaDB version, and I have only 4GB of RAM on my host! :)
