hmm... I would expect it to be dealt with sanely. Changing mainboards has been a thing since I've been in computing (going back to the 90s)

That's an open ended question unfortunately. There are people running DOS variants in bhyve VMs for example. I don't know the history of why the lpc was put where it is for non-windows guests, but it's always possible there's a system out there that depends on it.
