jayjwaMinix3, Solaris 9, and Omni OS don't have the user's primary listed after the last colon in /etc/groups. My Linux system does. That's where the confusion arose from.

m1arijayjwa: I don't think I've ever seen that on Linux. but most Linux systems seem to like creating a group for each user by default rather than putting all users in a smaller number of groups
