it is unfortunate but there's so many things that are broken on illumos in pkgsrc on a new install, at least when building from scratch :(

might be a nice project one day, to have some automated try-to-build for the whole tree. maybe such things exist, i don't know.

jperkin does do that as you found and also provides pre-built binaries.

I think there's also quite a bunch of docs around bootstrapping pkgsrc and related builds that he has if you need to build from source.
