I've tested the modified oamuser user tools. Quieting cpio removes the erroneous output as expected, so I guess the next step is figuring out how to properly submit my changes for review. One thing I'm unsure about right now is whether I should submit my changes (made against illumos-omnios) to the omnios project or the illumos project, or if it

matters, to what degree.

I could use some input from someone familiar with this process if you're willing? :-)

Wherever possible, we try and submit things straight to illumos-gate. illumos-omnios is a downstream of that which is synced weekly (well, most weeks)

This is a great first change as you get to use lots of the machinery, but I think it's going to be an uncontroversial improvement.
