Unrelated question, would it be feasible to use Oi/omni with illumos-joyent as its kernel instead of illumos-gate ?

why do you want to do that? The problem is, with few small changes, OI is using gate; omni and smartos are more depending on their respective system specific changes (like lx zones for example).

I use ppt to present GPUs to a Linnex VM. Works well for me. Never done it with a NIC though.
