mdb -k on postmortem folks, the fix for fenix illumos#17681 is under review, and I just tested it on SmartOS. Looks good so far.

I think you can set the alternate break from a boot option, but I'm not sure if it's just for serial

i'm rather limited in my options connecting to this HP box

and with all of the layers, can't seem to get F1-A to pass thru to the OS

acpihpd and powerd are failing during boot, and the system doesn't progress far enough to get to a login prompt...

which does seem strange...

gah... they put in a megaraid card :( i bet that's the problem (it's configured in raid mode)
