sommerfeld: with larger disks (especially in terms of spinning rust) I think we've approached the point where the additional redundancy might be worth having

it might also be a question now of the value of the data, the quaility of the disks (and factors of age and manufacturing batches), the quality of any backups etc.

I'm planning to move from 2-way mirror to 3-way mirror if/when I build HDC 4 (4th build of my home server). I know someone who's been doing 3-way mirror for a while now and he's quite pleasec about it.

Also I'm tempted to use a 4th disk where I run this for offsite backup disks:

zpool split -R /mnt realpool offsitpool <3rd of three-way mirror>

zpool export offsitepool

<remove third disk>

<insert fourth disk, now third>

zpool attach realpool <first disk> <fourth disk>

Always felt dangerous doing that with 3 disks for a 2-way mirror for some (irrational?) reason.

I remember a reading a piece (probably around 10 years ago) suggesting that raid5 was dead (or should be) as the unrecoverable read error rate had stayed the same whilst drive capacity had increased meaning the likelyhood of a read error on the remaining drives when rebuilding was higher than many would like

We got raidz2 (and then raidz3) for precisely that reason.

mlari: yeah, at some point you reach the point where operational error rather than storage device failiure becomes the most likely cause for data loss.
