hey there, we're having an Illumos centric weekend at my local UNIX Social Club (usc.silentio.us)

however, we just realized that the OmniOS handbook that we bookmarked was pretty much empty, lol

any suggestion of alternative resources for a bunch of people willing to give OmniOS (or any Illumos distribution for that matter)a try?

the goal is to setup a hypervisor so SmartOS sounded like a good plan, but so far, we have not succeeded in having the installer boot our DELL PowerEdge T440

OmniOS installation on our HP MicroServer gen10 was a breeze, however, so we're starting with that

one thing could be to post questions on #omnios or here on the channel and see if anyone is online and can help. especially when hitting a thing that is doen on Illumos/Omnios just different then elsewhere.

Ah I misread SmartOS for OmniOS which as well can virtualize and has a nice tool (see:) zadm. And it is a more "Normal" OS with lots of packages.

we were considering playing with SmartOS, but fell back to OmniOS for the time being

the idea is to become more familiar with the Solaris way of doing things first and foremost, we can always settle for refined solutions later on when we've played around a bunch

did you also consider plain OpenIndiana?

(FYI, SmartOS just works most of the time, it may be a bit picky about storage controllers and similar)

openindiana is server and desktop, right. ok, then your smartos vs. omnios choice seems legit.
