I have recently migrated from FreeBSD to OmniOS on my NAS, I knew I can't simply use the old zfs disks, so I had to create a backup which can be made with FreeBSD and can be read by OmniOS. This guide helped me a lot:

Too bad it isn't open source and not a faithful reimplementation :( I would love to have an SGI Tezro or Fuel, but I don't have money and storage space for them. The best option is emulating the HW using MAME.

I won't say I'm all wonderful or anything but I should be able to provide more useful feedback than 'my screen flashes a couple of times then the bootloader restarts'

I'm sure I'll learn more than I ever wanted to know about illumos initialization in the kernel and such...
