dangergrrl: Alright, well, it sounds like you're redoing several packages from OI (e.g., the gfx-drm stuff) that don't come from illumos-gate. I don't really know about the local patches OI are floating on the gate, either. So if OI folks have said use oi-userland, then, that's probably the way to go there!

jclulow, if the kernel drm drivers are actually oi and not illumos-gate, yes, I really want that to work so I plan to look at it.

Who here was playing with the Sun Studio compiler in Illumos? I remember filing a C++ syntax bug against it, but it never got fixed [before Oracle] and now I don't have a clue if it's still there.

I'm mildly curious to know if extern "C" void foo(); // is still not accepted without the curlies? But not enough yet, to install it myself.

"still not accepted" implies updated compiler, and illumos does not have that option, I'm afraid. So you would need Solaris or linux, I'm afraid...

I'd definitely be careful with it. I can't imagine the licence terms are good for open source folks, even if you can get it to run.

i meant it's listed as dropped from illumos for years on the www, you would know way more about that than i, i've only ever seen it as no longer supported by illumos

and it does not support you - the latest releases of Studio require changes that are only in Solaris, not illumos

Yeah... I'm extremely lucky to have a (Haswell-Era) server that manages to EFI PXE to Triton iPXE. I know that doesn't work for everyone. (Even with tsoome's recent fixes to solve the EFI framebuffer problems I was seeing on NUCs).

That is correct ( bahamat has the details in her L1/L2 caches more likely). ALSO, iPXE upstream is a bit prickly... they introduce a TCP buffering change that completely sabotaged many Triton deployments and we had to back it out in our downstream, e.g.

It's also why we, with a CN that really wants to boot from BIOS or EFI netboot, we send them Triton iPXE, and THEN we use Triton iPXE to get illumos/SmartOS and move along.

(These days you can, in addition to netbooting, you can also boot Triton iPXE right off a ZFS pool.)

Yeah, we do. Multiboot2 support is the big one. There's another that extends the memory space for the ipxe script, which is otherwise capped at 256b due to a bug in a decade and a half old version of Xen that's been long since fixed.

No sign of EFI anywhere that I can find. The newer one is based on a Supermicro X8SAX motherboard which I believe is bios-only.

YES bahamat it's the 256b cap that always eludes me.

And richlowe makes an excellent point... ISTR the X9 supermicros might fit in that bucket. The X10s *appear* to have actually-usable UEFI.

(At least the X10s that comprise Kebecloud/stooging do.)

The 256b limit kills the ability to do boot modules.

When we stood things up on Equinix, they use a default ipxe, and the line for networking.json was truncated so the file ended up being like networking.j.

I don't remember if we got a 404 trying to load it or if the whole file showed up as /system/boot/networking.j, but either way it made it unusable.

To fix that I had to chain load our ipxe binary and then do the real ipxe script

I have X10SAE supermicro, and its UEFI is oakyish, except that it only does 800x600 framebuffer (despite the mode you pick from mode list).

@tsoome_ I'm an Islay guy most of the time (Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Ardbeg...), but I have an amazing single-malt from our summer trip to Ireland from the middle of the country that reminds me of the Islay malts!
