In general you'll likely need to set up an etherstub and forwarding depending on the specifics.

ok, arp is going out, response is coming back on physical interface ixgbe0, but never seen on vnic on top of that ixgbe0....

(that vnic is given to smartos on bhyve, which did create vnic on it for a local zone:)
