oh autotools, never stop being terrible and inscruitable

tell me you haven't had to deal with other build systems without telling me you haven't had to deal with other build systems ;)

that doesn't mean others aren't just as bad..

but like mid-way through whatever it's doing, it seems to lose all knowledge of it's m4 macros

and honestly, for what it's doing, it's likely using autotools to solve problems that haven't existed for 30+ years

and then complains a file is missing, but I can't figure out what's supposed to generate that file

the only other thing I can think of is that there's something buggy w/ the version of autoconf in omnios, though that seems unlikely
