Does anyone know if I can install illumos on a MacBookPro 2015 and get the networking to work with Thunderbolt 2 to Ethernet?

or thunderbolt 1? well, whichever was the one on MBP 2015 :D

We don't have support for the thunderbolt connection manager right now because docs have always been loose (though USB4 has a bit there). I think if it starts with it plugged in it may work, but I'm not sure.

I didnt' hear anyone uing any illumos distro on Macs. Seem to me hardware is MacOS/Windows duopoly. Some success with older Macs on Ubuntu.. but before 2015.. help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation If you make it with Openindiana or some other distro, please make an article on your site about it, would be interesting .

Yup. didn't work with OmniOS. actually didn't even work with FreeBSD. maybe Linux has the drivers and I should find a way to port them, altho I've never worked on Drivers before!

These old macbooks are perfect for homelabs, now that they are very cheap.

Looks like I'll be running OmniOS inside bhyve for now, until I find an extra machine somewhere for bare-metal
