darwin
my new PC has GigaByte Aorus X870 Xtreme AI Top but FreeBSD 14.3 detected no network (neither ethernet nor wireless) devices
-
LxGHTNxNG
can we have a pciconf -v, darwin ?
-
darwin
'pciconf -v' wanted more arguments/flags/switches/parameters
-
darwin
LxGHTNxNG, so I've rebooted that one into FreeBSD and wondering what else to give that command to find out network devices...
-
darwin
is it 'pciconf -l -v'?
-
LxGHTNxNG
It might be
-
LxGHTNxNG
I must admit I forgot the -l
-
LxGHTNxNG
yeah it's -lv
-
darwin
i output it to a file and am rebooting to upload it
-
darwin
should I use p.basd-unix.net paste bin?
-
V_PauAmma_V
Whichever you're comfortable using. I've seen people here use a debian.org pastebin, even.
-
LxGHTNxNG
darwin: I can't reach that from here. You're going to have to use one that's available to the general internet.
-
darwin
bsd
-
darwin
that site broke. I put the .txt at
paste.debian.net/hidden/a9365475
-
darwin
did you see it, LxGHTNxNG or anyone?
-
LxGHTNxNG
darwin: I don't know of any drivers for that ethernet chip
-
darwin
ok
-
darwin
what about the wireless one, and how would I find if they're being worked on. The ethernet one does work in the Linux kernel but that has other problems
-
divlamir
darwin: apparently there's been no work done in the aquantia repo for 3 years already:
Aquantia/aqtion-freebsd #32
-

-
darwin
i see; odd
-
divlamir
-
divlamir
NetBSD supports it too
-

-

As a workaround, the bug report suggests routing through a small linux vm
-
darwin
i use OpenBSD servers but wouldn't for desktop, though NetBSD was my first desktop UNIX at home (FreeBSD at college previously)... of course, I tried to install it on new PC but haven't been able to boot, but that's a question for NetBSD... FreeBSD and strictly UNIX-like that have weekly to rolling release updates are my priority
-
divlamir
It just needs some developper time, seeing that it's already ported in Linux, NetBSD and OpenBSD..
-
divlamir
Meanwhile you can try a passthrough to a vm. Checkout
freshports.org/net/wifibox too
-
darwin
interesting
-
darwin
in future I'm more interested running Slackware in Bhyve rather than FreeBSD in Xen, but I don't do either currently
-
wildeboskat_
Does anyone use proton mail and drive on FreeBSD by any chance?
-
jastrom
wildeboskat_ only on linux, and the web variants of those
-
wildeboskat_
Ah so the apps are not ported?
-
wildeboskat_
I was looking for them in ports
-
mquin
you might want to look at rclone for the drive part, it appears to support protondrive and it's great with other storage services
-
divlamir
I wish thay had a cheaper tier with no server side encryption shenanigans, it ould have been a good package, usable with a regular mail client
-
divlamir
There is not even an issue tracker:
github.com/ProtonMail/proton-bridge
-
divlamir
So we can't easily pester them to consider supporting FreeBSD. To report an issue, you need Proton Mail Bridge running, WTF!?
proton.me/support/how-to-report-a-problem-from-proton-mail-bridge
-
nimaje
the get help button at the bottem of the page gets you to a web form
-
divlamir
Found it, will send (one more) request
-
wildeboskat
The main thing I would like to see is the email app or the email bridge
-
wildeboskat
And yes I don't personally care about the server side encryption either. After all, all my emails come in on plain text and from servers from either google or microsoft so they are already not private
-
wildeboskat
I'd love it if there was a way to switch that off so you don't have to deal with that bridge
-
divlamir
I don't care about guis either, bcs I have only headless installs. I opened a ticket from here:
proton.me/support/contact?topic=Proton+Mail+Bridge
-
f451
does proton bridge require a paid-for account?
-
f451
cos they're shortsighted if they do. cos you can't fully establish whether proton will do all you need. something like free for 30 days. fastmail does that, it's way bigger than proton i reckon
-
divlamir
I don't know really, don't consider the free tier worth it. But the paid tiers give you a lot more for the price than Fastmail
-
f451
yeah but if i cant test with mutt/imap without paying first - it's offputting. it'd be off-putting for others using $NOT_MAINLINE_EMAIL_CLIENT too. I'll go nag proton see if their position has changed. it used to be only web access on their free tier
-
divlamir
I agree. First they should consider supporting it on FreeBSD. To mutt it would look like just a regular IMAP server on localhost
-
f451
yep
-
f451
would be great if they could make it os agnostic
-
divlamir
Thought I will try it on Linux with a free account, but the download page says: Proton Mail Bridge is available only with a paid plan that includes Proton Mail.
-
divlamir
I'll go back to ignoring its existence
-
tyler1
as a proton mail paying customer, I would recommend... something else xD They've pushed a lot into their open source, but non-standard electron apps
-
rtyler
The bridge does work well enough with mutt and offlineimap/mbsync though, assuming your folder/label structure isn't too complicated.
-
nrubsig
Hi! Does the FreeBSD NFSv4 NFS server support case-insensitive filesystems ?
-

what bugzilla component would the bsdinstaller/bsd-dialog go under?

gnuself
Does anyone have a recommended hardware brand/platform/setup in mind when trying to DIY a freebsd NAS system running ZFS?
-
gnuself
I feel as though I want to support 4-5 HDD, but by that point I feel the costs start adding up if I'm buying PC parts to put it together. So maybe there's a hack/idea I haven't thought about.
-

If you're okay with 4, DS423+ is ~$700 USD.

gnuself: any motherboard with a PCIe slot + an LSI (Broadcom) SAS card with however many ports you need + a case with however many disk bays you need
-
CrtxReavr
I think the role of 1 MB of RAM per GB of disk still applies.
-
CrtxReavr
Or I guess 1 GB of RAM per TB of disk in more modern proportions.

gnuself: as far as motherboard goes, if you're looking for a home/soho system then ASRock are decent, if you want something more serious i'd look at Supermicro

» CrtxReavr refuses to look at SuperMicro since they moved their MFG offshore.

ivy: I could be dumb, but does using a SAS card hurt with zfs or simply depends on how it's configured?
-
rtprio
why would a sas card hurt?
-
ivy
gnuself: it's fine as long as it's not a RAID card. for the LSI (Broadcom) cards, just make sure they come with the "IT" firmware
-
ivy
"IT" means it works as a normal HBA and just presents the individual disks, which is what you want for ZFS
-
gnuself
got it, that's what I was concerned about... was equating SAS card with RAID
