Normally when asleep the red Thinkpad light cycles slowly on and off. If it is solid on then it might not be asleep. I always check by logging into the laptop from another system on the network.

Nope. But you can send a magic WOL packet by other means. And if the firmware is configured for it then it should wake up. The machine might be configured to ignore WOL too.

Hibernation usually refers to full power off saved to storage. In that case all LEDs would be off.

i'm currently initalizing (i.e. writing) an authenticated geli provider on top of a gmirror. it's writing with only ~35MB/s and i'm wondering why. /dev/zero can't be a bottleneck here, can it?

already not using /dev/random because that definitely is one.

tho i'm also wondering if using /dev/zero instead of /dev/random would open the provider up to a known-plaintext key extraction attack…

kevans: how secure is the usermode loader stuff? would you trust it to load a kernel from an untrusted virtual machine filesystem?
