02:55:37 Hey all, as someone who used Opensolaris back in 2009, and Linux since then, what's the state of OpenIndiana or another Illumos "distribution" compared to a modern Linux desktop, eg Fedora which I'm currently running? All the screenshots I see show it running MATE. Is it a modern version of MATE? Are we on X11 or have we switched to Wayland? I have rose-tinted goggles for OpenSolaris, as it was my 02:55:39 first non-Windows OS I used full time. 03:57:30 ThomasB: Rose-coloured glasses will likely help with dealing with the reality haha 03:58:10 Very little serious work has been done on the graphics or wifi stuff in a decade, realy 03:58:12 *really 03:59:07 On the plus side, there's an opportunity to be the person who does that work! 04:00:54 Oh boy, has the focus been on server since then, or has there just been not much of a focus at all? A lack of maintainers? 04:50:08 I think the focus is pretty solidly on server stuff, yeah 04:50:39 SmartOS, OmniOS, & Helios, have been some of the more well-funded distributions and they're all server things 04:51:10 Mind you, it's not like it would be impossible to do, e.g., the graphics work 04:51:33 It's just that the people who complain the loudest about how out of date it all is never seem to be willing to stump up and do the actual software work haha
